Design Service Manager
£450 - £500 Umbrella
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire - New Shire Hall - Fridays working from office, New Shire Hall Alconbury. Remainder of week flexible but a requirement for site visits and ad hoc attendance in office.
Contract - 3 month rolling contract for 12 months +
The Role:
- Importantly, the Design Service Manager has responsibility for overseeing and leading the County Councils in house design team across a varied portfolio of projects.
- The role is responsible for effective and efficient, design and delivery of schemes across a wide range of transport projects.
- You will collaborate with teams across the organisation to design infrastructure projects providing technical input and expertise throughout the pre-construction phase.
- You will lead a team of designers at different career stages and be responsible for their development and projects.
- In this role you will lead a team who will design customer focussed solutions, set delivery outcomes for projects, and define service outcomes working across teams with a range of needs - e.g., innovative safe designs, maximising contract savings and achieving value for money, whilst helping us work towards the aim of being net zero by 2035.
- The role supports the Group Manager and other managers within the Project Delivery Directorate in delivering the Councils objectives, through joined-up service planning, community engagement and the flexible use of resources.
- The individual will operate with autonomy, empowered to use their own judgement to make informed decisions around resource, budget, programme and design management.
- This decision making will include what to prioritise, how to spend the design budget and who to delegate the work to along with the ability to resolve service delivery contractual disputes on a day-to-day basis and explore design innovations.
The Candidate:
- Must have a Lvl 6-degree civil engineering.
- Must have IEng accreditation.
- Must have at least 10yrs experience working in Highways & Transport in a design focussed role across varied highway infrastructure projects in maintenance, traffic calming and active travel.
- Must have significant demonstrable design management experience in a large public / private sector organisation.
- Must be able to drive and have access to a vehicle for site visits, as well as managing contractors delivering on behalf of others.
- Needs to have considerable experience managing and developing others in design roles, (5yrs+).
- Needs to have considerable experience using project management software, either ASTA or MS Project and computer literate across Microsoft software packages, plus expert user in AutoCAD and Civils 3D.
- Must have considerable experience managing design consultants, packages of work, contractors, NEC contracts and costs to fit within set budgets.
