Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Motor Vehicle Technician and MOT Tester to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical background with experience of working on a range of vehicles (cars, vans, 4x4s and trailers) due to the diverse nature of working in a busy village garage.
Our Motor Vehicle Technicians are responsible for servicing vehicles ensuring they run safely, efficiently and reliably. This includes diagnosing faults and undertaking diverse mechanical repairs and maintenance (including engines, brakes, air-conditioning, suspension, transmission and electrical problems).
At the heart of our business, our Technicians are well-trained and highly organised professionals who take pride in their work and can perform various customer service duties as required. Due to the busy nature of our small business, a willingness to work overtime when needed is essential.
Essential Job Functions
Vehicle Maintenance:
- Fault finding: Inspect and diagnose vehicle faults manually or with the aid of software and digital tools
- Complete job cards: prepare cost and time estimates for work done
- Communication: discuss and interpret repair needs with customers
- Remedy: Repair and replace faulty vehicle parts
- Road test: Perform test drives to check repairs
- Carry out vehicle maintenance and servicing tasks
- Update vehicle service records
- Undertake service checks and Class IV MOT testing
Safety and Compliance:
- Clean and maintain the work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety
- Follow standards and procedures for ensuring compliance with DVSA (MOTs), Health and Safety at Work and other safety standards.
Personal Specification
Education and Experience:
- NVQ3 City & Guilds or equivalent
- MOT Testing qualification or a willingness to obtain (training will be provided)
- 3+ years of automotive repair experience (desirable)
- Knowledge of tools and equipment required to conduct all repairs
- Superior knowledge of motor vehicles and how to perform repair and maintenance tasks
- Knowledge of workshop health and safety and manual handling techniques
- Willingness to undertake ongoing CPD or other training (such as ADAS or EV/Hybrid Vehicles)
Skills:
- Customer service and verbal communication skills for explaining vehicle work to customers in accessible terms and discussing vehicle cases with other team members
- Excellent attention to detail and timekeeping
- Diagnostic and problem-solving skills for determining vehicle problems and how to resolve them
- Manual dexterity for working on vehicle parts, including sensitive sensors and electronic components
- Competency using diagnostic equipment

- A full clean driving licence is essential due to the location and need to undertake road tests
Working Conditions
Salary: £40,014 per annum (FTE)
Hours of Work: Full time, 45 hours a week, Monday to Friday (8:00am - 5:30pm) including 5 hours' contracted overtime plus opportunity for more.
Annual Leave: 20 days per annum (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 25 days per annum after 5 years.
