Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe B.V. (MERCE) is focused on development of renewable energy technology including energy systems and heat pumps for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVACS) in buildings. Our aim is to enable net-zero climate targets via high efficiency, zero emission, renewable heating and energy systems. We are seeking Research Engineers to join the growing Environment & Energy Systems Division in our UK branch. Roles are available in diverse areas, including thermal energy management and storage, IT cloud data analysis and HVAC control, reliability of water heating circuit and components. Job Description

Job Title: Research Engineer. Hours of Work: Full time (35hrs/wk). Location: near Edinburgh, UK. Holidays: 25 days (pro rata) first year; 27 thereafter; plus public holidays. Salary: Up to £60,000 (GBP) p.a. depending on expertise and experience. Role & Responsibilities:

  • Undertake applied R&D in the field of environment and energy systems.
  • Develop technology for HVAC and integrated energy systems in European buildings, towards achievement of ZEB / ZEH.
  • Develop thermal energy management and thermal storage technology for HVAC and building energy systems.
  • Develop data processing and data analysis methods for data from HVAC and building equipment and systems, via cloud-connected IT platforms.
  • Design and optimise control methods, control logic and control algorithms for HVAC and building systems.
  • Develop software code to implement control methods and algorithms.
  • Analyse failures in material, devices, equipment and systems via microscopy, spectrometry and chemical measurement techniques.
  • Determine root cause of failures in water circuits and water systems.
  • Propose improvements in materials, processes and designs for components, equipment and systems to increase reliability and lifetime.
  • Develop new technology to enhance the lifetime performance of water heating systems.
  • Evaluate performance of technology by experimental measurement.
  • Process, analyse and interpret experimental data.
  • Combine modelling and simulation results with experimental data.
  • Display and describe results in reports and presentations.
  • Co-ordinate collaborations with external technical partners, including universities.
  • Capture the technology invented by preparing patent applications.
  • Collaborate with global MERCE laboratories, communicating research results, including via business trips within Europe and to Japan.

Skills & Experience required:

  • Ph.D. in engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science or mathematics.; MSc/MEng may be considered.
  • A Bachelor degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science or mathematics.
  • At least 2 years post-qualification practical experience in an industrial or academic environment.
  • Expertise in the following: thermal physics, including thermodynamics, thermofluids, refrigerant cycle, heat transfer, heat storage, heat recovery. HVAC equipment and systems, including air-to-water heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, water circuit (hydronic) systems, heating systems, domestic hot water systems, heat exchanger. Energy systems, including, for example, renewable energy, solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, energy management, thermal energy management. Mechanical system prototyping. System control, for example, energy or heating, ventilation & air-conditioning (HVAC). Control, for example, control theory, control logic, control algorithms, optimisation. Systems, for example, system integration, energy systems. Cloud IT systems, for example, cloud data monitoring, cloud control. Software code development and programming, using, for example, C/C++, C#. Water chemistry or fouling, for example, water quality, scale deposition, metal corrosion. Material and failure analysis, for example, microscopy, spectrometry, electrochemistry, chemical composition analysis, metallurgical processes. Water systems, for example, water circuits including domestic hot water, water heating, heat exchangers, valves, pumps. Reliability engineering, for example, degradation mechanisms, failure modes, root cause determination, accelerated lifetime testing, predictive lifetime, failure rate, statistical analysis. Experimental measurement, sensors, instrumentation and data acquisition, using, for example, National Instruments data loggers, LabView software. Data processing and data analysis, using, for example, Python or Matlab for data processing.
  • Excellent oral communication skills, written and verbal presentation skills in English for technical report writing and visual presentation.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational skills and a desire for continuous learning.
  • Ability to effectively apply all skills in a fast-paced challenging industrial research environment within a team of experienced professionals. Ability to work independently and use own initiative.
  • Accurate and self-reliant with the ability to quickly pick up new ideas; logically approaches problems and effectively provides novel solutions.
  • Positive attitude and strong commitment to work; ability to work to project plans and prioritise own tasks.
  • Candidates with transferable skills from energy, automotive and process industries will be considered.
