The Modern Foreign Languages Department:

In September 2020, the school relocated to modern, purpose-built facilities on our new state-of-the-art campus on the edge of Macclesfield and Prestbury. French, German and Spanish are currently taught to pupils in all Key Stages. Teachers from the Department also deliver lessons to pupils in the Infant and Junior Division. Japanese is also offered in the Sixth Form. Teachers are encouraged to be creative in their approach to learning and to use and share their own materials, in addition to using textbooks and publications. The Modern Languages Faculty has the benefit of a native-speaker Language Assistant in each language, who works closely with pupils across all Key Stages.

The Modern Languages Department has its own teaching area where it enjoys the use of a dedicated multi-media computer room and interactive whiteboard. Teaching rooms are equipped with standard items such as Interactive Whiteboards and audio equipment. There is ample provision of display areas.

Pupils study French, German, Spanish and Latin in a carousel during the first term in Year 7 and then choose to continue with two from the four languages after Christmas, then continuing with these through Years 8 and 9. Pupils take a minimum of one language to GCSE, and are encouraged to take two languages.

The Spanish Department uses the 'Viva' course and the accompanying interactive package for classes at Key Stage 3. Year 10 pupils then use 'Viva' for the IGCSE examination. In the Sixth Form, the department uses the Hodder A Level textbook in addition to a range of other resources. We also teach the Language Alliance Accreditation in Languages for Business in Spanish.

The Modern Languages Department encourages study trips abroad. Spanish trips include visits to Cádiz and Seville. French trips include an activities holiday for Year 7 pupils in Normandy, an annual language learning experience for Years 10 and 11 in Paris, and an Easter study visit or work experience programme for Sixth Formers. German trips include a trip to Berlin, a student exchange, and a visit to Aachen Christmas markets.

We have a very active and strong extra-curricular programme within the MFL Faculty, with a variety of regular clubs including Language Leaders, film and cultural events, a German Drama Club and an MFL Editorial Team who publish a termly magazine, Linguavox. Sixth Formers enter the North West Languages Debating Competition and we also enter the UK Linguistics Olympiad.

The Vacancy:
