Pastoral Student mentor

Reed Further Education are seeking a compassionate and proactive Pastoral Student Mentor to join our educational team in Birmingham. This permanent, part-time role is crucial for enhancing student achievement and retention by providing mentoring support to ‘at risk' learners with various support needs, including emotional and behavioural difficulties, mental health, and safeguarding issues.

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours per Week: 26.4

Term-time Only: Yes, 38 weeks

Actual Salary: £24,062 - £24,727 per annum (pro-rata for part-time)

Location: Birmingham

Day to Day of the Role:

  • Assist tutors in supporting ‘at risk' learners in various settings, including one-to-one or small group sessions, tutorials, and enrichment activities.
  • Support ‘Looked After/Leaving Care' learners, coordinating with Social Workers and tutors to implement Personal Education Plans.
  • Liaise with support staff and tutors to monitor and support learners with identified mental health issues.
  • Act as a first point of contact within the safeguarding triage team.
  • Promote positive behaviour, attendance, and respect among learners.
  • Monitor attendance, report on, and follow up with individuals to improve attendance and punctuality.
  • Motivate and encourage learners to take responsibility for their learning and help them set and maintain realistic targets.
  • Maintain thorough records of meetings with students and actions taken, ensuring records are comprehensive and accessible to relevant staff.
  • Identify and develop appropriate learning resources and act as a link between student services and curriculum.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Be qualified to level 3
  • Hold a level 2 or above in English (Literacy), e.g., Adult Literacy, GCSE A-C.
  • Hold a level 2 or above in Maths (Numeracy), e.g., Adult Numeracy, GCSE A-C, or be able to demonstrate the skills at that level.
  • Experience of mentoring young learners.
  • Experience of working with learners with a range of mental health difficulties.
  • Experience of supporting learners in an educational environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to encourage and motivate learners to succeed.
  • Have an understanding of individual learner needs.
  • Organisational skills.
  • Good IT skills to include Microsoft Office packages and Management Information Systems.
