Tax Accountant

Service Care Solutions are looking for a Tax Accountant to work within the London Fire Brigade on a 3-month contract.

Location: Southwark (Hybrid)

Job role/responsibilities:

  • A legacy issue where law was changed to calculate P11Ds but LFB's process/policy did not change, which means issues around people's tax bills being incorrect.
  • Need to work back through 2019,2020,2021,2022 at where the errors are and to correct them, and identify why it went wrong, what control was in place, what could have been done better and how to eliminate similar happening in future.
  • Looking at the corporate error as was not only a finance error. HR should have been involved in the process too. HR are now looking into preparing a policy around this and highlight which part of the policy sits with which department and where hand offs should be, so all is clearer for future.
  • Requires a specialist Tax Accountant to investigate the issue and take control.
  • Attend meetings with senior stakeholders, be confident and understands where things went wrong and how to correct it.
  • LFB report to City Hall, therefor the Deputy Mayor is aware of this issue. LFB have now commissioned MOPAC to do a review of the process, this person will work closely with MOPAC.
  • Liaising with PS Tax who liaise with HMRC on behalf of LFB.
  • Manage the mailbox and respond to emails.
  • Will be located with payroll manager and payroll team when attending the office so will work very closely with them.

Knowledge/experience required:

  • Understand tax regime and tax issues - leased car P11D BIK regime is desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills and confident telling the story to senior stakeholders, exactly how things are. E.g what went wrong, and this is what we are doing now etc...
  • Part-Qualified or Qualified accountant.
  • Financial analytical skills, attention to details.
  • Strategic critical thinker.
  • People relationship and change management.
  • Resilience.
  • High level senior person with a strategic background.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • If they have previous knowledge and background in P11D BIK then the person will be able to pick it up and turn it around quickly.
  • Must come from public sector background as this is on local government level.
