What is the Role?

The SSEN Transmission Offshore Delivery team is currently recruiting for Lead Project Managers to deliver various High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects before 2030 regulatory deadlines, to directly facilitate Scotland's ambitions to meet Net-Zero.

We require Lead Project Managers to lead the delivery of various onshore civil and building packages, with values potentially in excess of £300m. Reporting to a Deputy Project Director, you will be responsible for the development and refinement of the packages, including ECI and Initial Works by framework contract partners. You will manage the packages into the execution phase and until completion, managing a team of project managers. You will play a pivotal role in the successful execution of our innovative disaggregated delivery model – maximising standardisation, ensuring collaboration across the supply chain, and managing package interfaces. You will work closely with other package teams as well, such as Converter, Design, Cable, and Substations. The scale of our portfolio of projects is already large and is likely to grow in the coming years, meaning there will likely be opportunities for progression within the business.

The key duties & responsibilities of the Lead Project Manager will include:

  • Accountable to the business for the safety, health, and wellbeing of all personnel, and for environmental aspects of those packages being managed.
  • Leading project teams and framework contract partners through the pre-construction phase and then successfully executing the construction phase, providing regular leadership on site. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory, and internal regulations; processes and governance.
  • Commercial responsibilities, including NEC contract negotiation and management as well as budgetary responsibilities, potentially in excess of £300m (although will vary by package).
  • Provide guidance and demonstrate our core values and ASTI Charter commitments. Manage teams, ensuring these are highly capable, well-motivated and organised to deliver consistent excellence.
  • Identify business and process improvements and support colleagues and the business to develop and implement these.

What do I need?

To be considered for these Lead Project Manager positions we are looking for an experienced leader with demonstrable experience in managing civil and/or buildings within technically complex large capital projects, ideally with specific knowledge of electricity networks and converter stations.

We would therefore love you to have:

  • People management experience and a passion for safety, with an understanding of project management methodology and practice to lead a multi-discipline team to success; coupled with an engineering, construction, or project management qualification / degree or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbally and experience of communicating with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Engineering or construction knowledge and understanding, including the associated environmental and safety legislation e.g. the CDM 2015 regulations.
  • Contractual management experience (NEC3 experience is preferable), with the ability to forecast and control costs as well as develop and manage integrated project programmes.
  • Experience of the governance, reporting, and management requirements for large projects and/or programmes of work in a regulated environment, with prior budget responsibilities.
