The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) is the UK's leading hen welfare charity, rehoming over 60,000 hens annually. They champion hen welfare, collaborate with the industry, and spearhead educational and mental wellbeing initiatives globally. This year, they are set to rehome their one-millionth hen, marking an extraordinary milestone.

They are on the search for a Volunteer & Operations Manager to join their passionate team.

Location: Hybrid (Remote/Various UK Locations)
Salary: £32,000 - £34,000 pro rata (dependent on experience)
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (1 in 3 weekends required, with a day off in lieu provided)
Benefits: include 28 days of annual leave (including bank holiday), increasing to 33 days with service. Additional perks are a company pension, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a supportive culture with development opportunities.

The Opportunity:

As the Volunteer & Operations Manager, you will lead a dynamic team of 6 and a dedicated volunteer force of 1,400+, ensuring the seamless operation of their rehoming and volunteer programmes. Your innovative approach will help them continue to save thousands of hens from slaughter each week and improve the lives of countless people.

Role Highlights:

  • Volunteer Management: Recruit, train, and support their volunteer network, ensuring they have the resources and skills needed to excel. You'll be responsible for the smooth operation of volunteer-related activities, including addressing any challenges and maintaining high engagement.
  • Operations Oversight: Manage the logistics of their rehoming operations, from farm depopulation to rehoming, ensuring all processes are welfare-friendly and efficient. You'll work closely with volunteers and the wider team to maintain high standards.
  • Communication: Collaborate with their Communications & Marketing teams to develop effective strategies that keep volunteers informed and engaged. You'll ensure their volunteers are well-versed in BHWT's mission and opportunities.
  • Reporting: Provide regular updates and reports to senior management, focusing on operational figures, volunteer feedback, and improvements.

About You:

They're looking for a proactive individual with a passion for animal welfare and a strong background in volunteer management. Operational experience is essential, with the ability to oversee and streamline processes to ensure smooth and efficient operations. You'll have experience leading geographically dispersed teams and a knack for strategic thinking. Empathy, resilience, excellent communication skills, and a drive for continuous improvement are key.
