The opportunity:

As a team central to Markel International, being part of the Office of the CUO offers regular contact points with key decision makers, and excellent exposure across the business.

Champion a dynamic culture of risk awareness and proactive reporting throughout Markel International's underwriting divisions. Stay vigilant to both specific and systemic risks within our diverse product portfolio.

Monitor and analyse political, economic, social, and technological emerging trends to understand and mitigate potential impacts on risk levels/appetite.

Collaborate with teams across Exposure Management, Risk Management, Underwriting, Actuarial, and Corporate departments.

Drive continuous improvement in Markel's underwriting risk management practices, leveraging the latest advancements from within and beyond the insurance industry.

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide analysis and reporting to help identify sources of a variety of sources of volatility e.g. natural, non-natural, emerging risks.
  • Utilise modelling output and develop internal scenarios to drive decision-making and understanding of the risks key to the business.
  • As a second hire into the Underwriting Risk area, you'll make a significant impact on the divisions capabilities: identifying sources of volatility and acting to mitigate these risks.
  • Assist the Head of Underwriting Risk run several groups across underwriting risk within areas such as emerging risk, climate change, and cyber.

Our must haves:

  • Strong project management, organisational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to problem solve independently, confident in piecing together data/outputs that offers senior stakeholders clear insights into what's happening
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills and experience with various reporting and business intelligence tools.
  • Knowledge of catastrophe management or risk management techniques, tools and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of insurance and reinsurance concepts. Having completed or working towards an industry qualification is encouraged but not essential. Study support can be made available.

Ideal for an actuarial student not seeking to qualify, and seeking commercial risk opportunities. Equally catastrophe risk analysts or exposure analyst seeking a role within an underwriting aligned function.
