Health and Safety Officer

Job Title: Health and Safety Officer Salary: £45,000 - £48,000 DOE Location: Tameside Hours: 35hrs per week Full time office based Permanent opportunity.

Main Purpose of the Role:
To keep up to date with and inform management of constantly changing legislation on all Health & Safety matters affecting the business.

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

  • To develop Health & Safety manuals for each department including risk assessments and improved working methods in accordance with Health & Safety Regulations.
  • To update risk assessments on a regular basis.
  • To produce COSHH assessments in line with the COSHH Regulations.
  • To carry out PUWER assessments on site equipment in line with the PUWER Regulations 1998.
  • To report on all accidents within the factory/offices, maintain the Company's accident report book and additional records required by the Company Secretary. To investigate any accident and obtain eyewitness statements. To discuss with departmental managers improved working methods in order to prevent accidents. To prepare and submit for discussion with the departmental manager, written appropriate working methods and to ensure that agreed working methods are then circulated to relevant employees.
  • To submit RIDDOR reports to the HSE in accordance with legislation.
  • To assist and supply any information as required by our insurers regarding any site activity.
  • To ensure the first aid team is properly manned. To ensure appropriate first aid supplies are available. To ensure the first aid room is clean and tidy at all times. To maintain confidential first aid records for all employees including information concerning personal health information and data when given voluntarily by employees. To ensure these records are available for inspection by the Company Secretary.
  • To ensure the efficiency of the fire alarm system and emergency lighting system, maintaining a log of the results and ensure these records are available for inspection by the Company Secretary.
  • To maintain sufficient stock of PPE and distribute this when required.
  • To ensure that all firefighting equipment is kept up to date and in good working order and to liaise with the Fire Authority, via the Company Secretary, regarding any proposed changes.
  • To perform the statutory Evacuation Drills across the sites and maintain supporting evidence for inspection by the Company Secretary.
  • To recommend the use of personal protective equipment and to ensure that adequate supplies are available.
  • To maintain records of all company drivers including forklift truck drivers and ensure appropriate specialist training is carried out by informing the HR Officer.
  • To ensure all lifting equipment is in good working order and to liaise with the Facilities Manager regarding maintenance. To carry out in-house manual handling training where appropriate.
  • To carry out annual noise surveys in all areas and report the findings to the department manager and Company Secretary.
  • To assist with and develop Training Manuals for employees.
  • To maintain & update the company Training Matrix and organise any required training.
  • To liaise with the Local Authority via the Company Secretary, regarding the Company's prescribed processes under the Environmental Protection Act.
  • To chair the quarterly Safety Committee meetings, organise internal audits and report on any actions to be taken to the relevant department.
  • To provide a monthly Health & Safety report on health and safety related matters arising throughout the factory.

This report will include:

  • Issues raised during the period and action taken
  • Any outstanding issues where appropriate action has not been taken after consultation with the appropriate manager.
  • To carry out any other duties when required to reasonably correspond with this post.

Essential Criteria:

  • Good knowledge of all current Health and Safety regulations.
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or higher.
  • Experience of working within the manufacturing industry
  • First Aid at Work Certificate.
  • Good IT Knowledge.
  • Excellent time management, self-motivated, high levels of integrity.
