SC Cleared Frontend Software Developer Fortran

Posted by Salt Search.

I am looking for a Frontend Developer skilled in Fortran for an initial 6-month contract for a Central Government executive agency Salt are partnered with currently.

The role is INSIDE IR35 and paying a maximum of £600 per day

You MUST have active SC to be successful

My client is looking for a contractor to support the development of the frontend of a prototype digital twin within their project, with experience in delivering a cloud-based solution to a problem based in the physical world. This work will support research, development and learning in data science (incl. machine learning), earth observation and digital twins.

The key aim of the frontend is to expose (show) insights extracted from combining geospatial environmental and non-environmental information in and around urban areas, in the form of interactive maps and graphs, in a robust and secure way.

Working in the project team, the frontend developer will explore the creation of and develop a frontend on a cloud-based system (most likely AWS), in a reproducible, scalable and reusable way. The frontend will take in data from various sources produced with Python code by the project scientists, and be designed in such a way that the project team will be able to understand how it is built, and to contribute to its development.

The ability to understand the backend and guide its development for optimal integration with the frontend will be an advantage. A key part of the work will be to understand the scientific requirements, to document and test the frontend, and to adapt to continuous developments of the data to be exposed to users).

Responsibilities

  • Gather requirements for the frontend of the prototype digital twin being developed
  • Develop the frontend in a robust, secure and documented way
  • Work closely with the project team to incorporate the latest scientific developments into the frontend
  • Enable the project team to contribute eventually to the frontend development and take it forward after the term of this contractor post

Skills required

  • Ability to scope, design, build and deliver a scalable, affordable frontend solution in a cloud-based system (most likely AWS), thereby turning a scientific research question into a technical solution. This requires experience in working with geospatial information systems, physical models and gridded geospatial data.
  • Ability to work effectively within a scientific research environment (with its inherent uncertainty) and to create technical solutions that integrate well within a Python scientific codebase.
  • Ability to understand the technological constraints of the systems and to find flexible solutions to the challenges these present (including information security, data sharing, data characteristics such as big volume of data, gridded 4D information, particular spatial projections).
  • Evidence of good software engineering skills (e.g. importance of software engineering lifecycle, code management, quality assurance).
  • Ability to deliver high-quality output successfully, both independently and as part of a team, meeting tight deadlines, planning and organising own work as required. Evidence of taking a technical leadership role in order to help others deliver.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to non-experts and stakeholders
  • Ability to work in an effective and inclusive manner with others, to listen actively and understand diverse viewpoints. Ability to support others in developing theirs, leading to beneficial impacts.

Desirable skills

  • Experience in automating data ingestion and quality-assurance processes on a scale large enough to deal with meteorological data, especially for ingesting data from a variety of sources that they use.
  • Knowledge of lower-level languages such as Fortran
  • Experience in working with machine learning approaches, particularly in creating platforms that are optimised for the use of this new technology.
  • Past experience of working on governmental projects.
