Technical Author - Top Global Media Systems company - Lancing, West Sussex

My client is a digital media company who are recruiting for an experienced Technical Author to join their team in West Sussex. This role is mostly working onsite at their Sussex offices and will require you to be able to drive to their office as they do not have easy public transport access.

This role will be the main person responsible for producing documentation for all software and hardware products across the business and providing manuals, user guides and documentation for complex digital media systems used by blue chip brand companies across the globe.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create user manuals, workflow guides and other material aimed at increasing the level of knowledge in our userbase as well as minimising the reliance on our support team. You will be responsible for creating the various documentation materials through both hands-on exploration of our products along with collaboration with other internal subject matter experts.
  • Collaborate across all departments to create comprehensive documentation which will be consumed by internal and external users to allow them to help themselves and learn on their own and at their own pace.
  • Follow the product lifecycle closely and ensure that all documentation and other information is kept up to date.
  • Support the company with oversight in knowledge management and guidance in delivering internal and external information which is entirely comprehensible and presented in a consistent and coherent manner while aligning with the company brand standards.
  • Work as the company's document administrator, working to maintain the organisation of our document repository and ensure versioning and identification conventions are upheld.

They are also looking for someone who:

  • Possesses outstanding communication skills. Your oral, written and presentation styles are outstanding. Know how to present information in a clear and concise manner that is easily digestible. Understanding basic learning principles and use them to keep an audience engaged.
  • Have experience with creating various mediums such as manuals or online videos coupled with the use of photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts to increase a user's understanding.
  • Is creative, proactive, and forward-thinking, and will quickly integrate into the team and develop ideas for projects that will enhance the understanding of our product portfolio.
  • Is confident when suggesting improvements based on their own experience and customer feedback as this is a natural part of this role and something we encourage as a business.
  • Enjoys working alone or as part of a small team.
  • Can travel to customer sites both in the UK and abroad. This might include assisting in tasks such as end-user training and sales and demo support.

Mandatory Skills:

  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent. This can be offset by an appreciable amount of experience in the media server, pixel processing, show control, and experiential AV industries as an alternative.
  • Ability to simplify texts/projects/documents for the targeted audience.
  • Excellent written skills in English.
  • Proven experience in a technical authoring environment.
  • Experience with Software languages - one of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and possibly PHP.
  • Proven experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is essential.
  • Broad web technology skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office knowledge.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and make them understandable in text, videos, and pictures.
  • Able to demonstrate innovative approaches to communication (including the use of visuals/different interfaces) to maximise the impact on communication.

Desirable skills:

  • Understanding of modern software development techniques and standards.
  • Experience as a technical author in a company that produces sophisticated software products.
  • Experience with Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence).
  • Exposure to versioning control software like Git.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team-working skills.
  • Valid passport for occasional international travel.
  • Driving licence
