We have a fantastic opportunity for Six Passenger Assistants at Wigan Council, this is a part-time temporary role for the next 2 - 3 months with the possibility of extension.

What is the role?

Wigan Council are looking for Six Passenger Assistants, to escort children and young people, with special educational needs, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, to schools both inside and outside the borough each day utilising a split shift. You could be working on a one-to-one basis or with several children/young people. You will be responsible for the safety, well-being, and comfort of the children/young people during transit.

What are your responsibilities?

  • To take overall management responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the home and staff to ensure that the home meets the Children's Homes Regulations and Quality standards.
  • Assist passengers on and off the vehicle at the start and end of their journey, as required.
  • Ensure that all passengers are safely received into the educational establishment they are attending and safely arrive at their home destination at the end of the day.
  • Work with and engage with the passengers with a range of disabilities and complex needs.
  • Deal with challenging behaviours and promote a calm and relaxed environment for all passengers.
  • Update management with successful intervention techniques which can be captured electronically and used as best practice throughout the PA cohort.
  • Complete detailed, accurate and timely incident reports as required.
  • Ensure the safety, comfort and well-being of passengers for the duration of their journey.
  • Build effective relationships with passengers and their families, carers and schools to ensure an outstanding, reliable service

What skills do you Need?

  • Must have recent experience of working as a Passenger Assistant, or as a Family Support Worker working with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND).
  • Each PA is collected from their home by a contracted taxi.
  • If agency workers live outside Wigan borough, they may need to drive to a prearranged pick-up point. Mileage will not be paid for this journey.
  • Split shift
  • Minimum 15 hours per week. PAs average 18 - 20 hours per week.
  • PATS training will be provided if required.
  • Must be physically fit and healthy, as you will have to assist passengers on and off the bus/
  • Excellent people skills, as you will be speaking to the public, other members of staff and managers.
  • Valid Enhanced DBS on the update service
