My client is a leading manufacturer, established over 100 years ago and are well known for their wide range of applications and industry sectors worldwide.

The Opportunity

The goal of the Graduate Trainee position is that with the right training and experience over a 2 year programme the individual will gain extensive and broad based experience to grow into a senior role within the finance department and gain a professional qualification.

The Finance Graduate will work closely with experienced professionals to gain hands-on experience and develop essential skills in all areas of finance, including financial planning and analysis, costing, reporting, investment appraisal, treasury, and risk management. The position offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates looking to launch their careers in finance and grow within a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Tasks

Month 1: Orientation and onboarding

  • Company overview - history, values, structure, products, etc.
  • Company policies and code of conduct
  • Finance department structure and functions
  • Financial systems and software, e.g. SAP
  • Trainee's role and responsibilities

Month 2-3: Accounting, Costing and Reporting

  • Understanding costing system and processes
  • Overhead allocation and absorption costing
  • Month-end financial processes and reporting
  • Year-end processes and financial statements
  • Maintenance of financial databases and systems

Month 4-5: Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Gross margin variance analysis
  • Stock valuations and aged stock analysis
  • Capital investment appraisal
  • Financial support to Business Units, e.g. bid submissions

Month 6: Accounts Payable

  • Purchase-to-pay processes
  • Management of purchase ledger accounts
  • Goods Received Not Invoiced (GRNI)
  • Vendor payment proposals and payment runs
  • Employee expenses
  • New vendor set-up process

Month 7-8: Treasury & Banking

  • Bank accounts and processes
  • Cash flow management
  • Bonds and bank guarantees
  • Letters of credit, etc
  • FX hedging contracts
  • Hedge accounting

Month 9: Accounts Receivable

  • Sales order-to-cash processes
  • Management of sales ledger accounts
  • Commercial risk evaluation process
  • Credit hold releases
  • Bad and doubtful debts
  • Legal action to recover debts

Month 10: Payroll, Tax and Compliance

  • Payroll processing and reports
  • VAT regulations and returns
  • Corporation tax and returns
  • Withholding tax and recovery
  • Employment, property and other taxes
  • Companies House, ONS and other statutory returns

Month 11: Audit, Risk and Insurance

  • Statutory audit
  • Quarterly limited reviews
  • Internal audit
  • Risk management
  • Internal controls
  • Insurance programme

Month 12: Projects / Other areas

  • Automation of financial processes
  • SAP developments and upgrade
  • Interdepartmental workflows and dependencies
  • Communication and presentation skills
  • Ethical and professional standards
  • Mentoring and networking

Year 2

Working with a mentor in areas of function where they are likely to be placed at the end of the trainee period.

Responsibilities increasing with experience.

Person Profile

Degree in Finance, Business Studies or similar business discipline (or currently studying for such a Degree)
