We are currently looking to employ an Estimator comfortable working independently on the preparation of tenders ranging from a few thousand pounds to £5m. Bakers primarily operate in the residential, commercial, ecclesiastical and education sectors.

We enjoy an excellent reputation for quality with our expertise working on historic and listed buildings being well known regionally. Bakers work predominately across Essex, Cambridge, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, and London.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will be based at our head office in Danbury, Essex working closely with our Special Works and Major Projects departments. Each of these department's carryout about £5m of turnover each year across a diverse range of buildings, many of which are listed and historically significant, however a significant part of our turnover is generated on new build projects so the role will come with variety. We have a sizeable direct labour force and a well-established supply chain of specialist subcontractors & suppliers.

You will work within a close-knit team of experienced professionals carrying out the full estimating process, from initial enquiries through to tender adjudication and submittal, liaising closely with Clients, Architects and Engineers throughout. You will be comfortable estimating from first principles as well completing and producing Bills of Quantities and Schedules of Work. You will have well-rounded background knowledge of the Construction Industry. You will need to possess good problem-solving capabilities along with excellent communication, interpersonal, team working, computer skills and must be able to represent the company well.

Whilst having familiarity with works to historic buildings would be advantageous, we are acutely aware that such knowledge is not commonplace. Consequently, applications from candidates who do not have this experience currently are most welcome as full training will be given by the current experienced staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Make visits to proposed construction projects.
  2. Carry out site surveys, meeting stakeholders.
  3. Analysing project plans and specifications
  4. Take off information from drawings and tender documents to calculate the cost of materials, plant, labour and sub-contract packages, in accordance with an agreed programme of works and procurement schedule.
  5. Obtain quotes for all necessary sub-contractors and suppliers.
  6. Prepare tender for adjudication with directors.
  7. Submit tenders and resolve post tender queries and value engineering proposals.
  8. On occasion the successful candidate may be required to provide commercial support on live contracts. This may include pricing variations, preparing valuations, assisting with subcontract placements and other similar activities.
