Environmental Services Assistant 38.66hrs - Atria Watford

Purpose of the Role

The Environmental services assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and presentable environment within the building. This includes carrying out regular cleaning duties such as litter picking, emptying bins, sweeping, wiping and reporting any hazards or maintenance issues. The role is essential in ensuring that customers and visitors experience a tidy, well-maintained space that reflects the standards of the site and contributes to their overall satisfaction.

By taking a proactive approach to cleanliness and safety, environmental services assistant helps to prevent accidents, deter vandalism, and promote a positive public image. The role also involves working independently, managing time effectively, and responding promptly to any urgent cleaning needs or incidents that may arise during the shift.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain designated areas (internal/external) to required standards.
  • Operate cleaning machinery and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures, including COSHH and PPE guidelines.
  • Remove waste and recycling appropriately, including compacting and sorting.
  • Litter pick and sweep walkways, and landscaped areas.
  • Respond to spillages, graffiti, and hazards promptly.
  • Assist with snow/ice clearance and gritting during winter months.
  • Support events by moving furniture/equipment as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records and checklists for cleaning and machinery.
  • Provide excellent customer service, assisting visitors when required.
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to a positive team environment.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Skills

Good attention to detail – able to spot litter, hazards, or areas needing extra cleaning.

Time management – able to prioritise tasks and complete work efficiently within shift times.

Self-motivation – able to work independently and take initiative without constant supervision.

Basic communication skills – able to report issues clearly and interact politely with the public and team members.

Physical fitness – capable of performing manual tasks, including walking, lifting, and using cleaning tools over long periods.

Problem-solving – able to assess situations quickly and act appropriately, especially in minor Incidents or safety concerns.

Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of cleaning techniques – including use of brooms, mops, litter pickers, and general cleaning products.
  • Health & safety awareness – knowledge of how to work safely, handle waste, and report hazards (e.g. COSHH basics, slips/trips prevention).

Experience

  • Previous cleaning experience in a similar role (e.g. car parks, public spaces, commercial or industrial settings) is desirable but not essential. Full training can be provided for the right candidate.
  • Experience working independently
  • Any prior experience following health and safety procedures in a workplace setting is a plus (e.g. hazard reporting, safe waste disposal, or use of cleaning products).

Working Hours - Varied shifts rolling roster 38.66 hours PW

Salary - £12.81PH
