Regional Health and Safety Manager

We are currently looking for a Health and Safety Regional Manager to support the Head of Health and Safety in the identification and development of continuous improvement plans for their specified areas of responsibility. Your role will be to liaise with the Regional Director of Sales, their subordinates, and as needed others, to ensure improvement plans are implemented. You will help develop and implement the national health and safety strategy.

This role will be field based and will involve regular travel (a car will be provided!). Ideally we are looking for someone Midlands based as this role will cover both North and South - Other locations will be considered for the right candidate.

Key Accountabilities

  • Using all necessary forums, safety groups or other forms of information to keep themselves and the department up to date with legislation and best practice.
  • Completion of monitoring, audits, and coaching visits to all Company locations including warehouse(s). In addition to virtual visits.
  • To research, review and make recommendations for improvement of current safety management systems to ensure the Company is compliant with legislation, and where practical has in place industry best practice.
  • To review, validate and record internal safety inspections, accidents and near misses to agreed persons, as well as provide statistical information. Making recommendations on updating and improving those systems to enable best in class trend identification.
  • Support the Head of Health and Safety in development of regional and national strategy helping to ensure Company financial criteria are adhered to when making recommendations for investment.
  • Liaising with nominated colleague initially within Commercial to support the development and implementation of ISO14001, developing processes to enable Group wide participation and inclusion in ISO14001 Environmental Management Strategy.
  • Develop and present agreed topics to area, regional, function specific and national safety and environmental meetings.

People/Leadership

  • To provide advice and information to the Head of Health and Safety on accidents / claims having involvement with insurers / underwriters to minimise business risk.
  • To develop relationships with other functions to improve internal co-operation and systems.
  • Leading of agreed projects with the provision of a business overview, scoping, desired results and completion to agreed timelines. Acting as subject specialist on other functions projects or request for information.
  • To assist and where needed lead the continual development of information technology systems to improve functionality of safety systems.
  • In cooperation with property, distribution, logistics and commercial departments to ensure refits, new stores or locations have the necessary safety equipment; as well as procedures specific to that location to ensure safe operation.

Risk and process

  • Production of accurate and timely reports outlining opportunities / risk to the Head of Safety, Health Environment on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Working with Health and Safety Administration Coordinator to monitor accidents / near misses to actively identify fatality or serious injury potential in current and new stores, and other specified areas of responsibility. Then to develop and put in place necessary measure to remove or mitigate the risk.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

Essential

  • Self-motivated with a can do attitude
  • Ability to organise and manage time effectively to deliver to tight deadlines
  • Willingness to travel and spend up to 2 nights away from home per week
  • Logical thinker with the ability to problem solve
  • Ability to manage several projects of different dimensions, lengths & levels of complexity
  • Ability to build effective relationships internally and externally
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Approachable manner with a passion for meeting people and developing networks of professional contacts
  • High-level of professionalism and discretion
  • Resilient and pragmatic attitude
  • Full UK Driving licence
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) to a basic standard.
  • Health and Safety qualifications with a minimum of Associate Member (AIOSH) and working towards Technical Member of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Tech IOSH)
  • Fire risk assessment qualification or able to demonstrate competency

Desirable

  • Good understanding of the legislative framework
  • Established pool of health and safety contacts
  • Technical member working towards Graduate member or greater of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
  • Affiliate member with a desire for higher level of membership of Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)
  • Member of ROSPA
  • Varied experience from other similar businesses such as retail, warehousing, and logistics
