Job Title: SCN – Chemical Plant Operator

Reports to: QC Manager / Works Manager
Direct Report: N/A
Indirect Reports: Colleagues across the business

Main Purpose of the Role:

We are seeking a skilled Chemical Plant Operator responsible for the operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of a saponification plant involved in soap production. The candidate will manage chemical processes that blend fats and oils with caustic soda, ensuring smooth operation and quality control. This hands-on role requires strong interpersonal skills and offers the potential for career advancement into a shift management position, with broader responsibilities in plant operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plant Operation:
  • The role involves starting and stopping the SCN and all auxiliary equipment.
  • Operators will work with both indoor and outdoor machinery, applying knowledge in computers, math, physics, and chemistry to maintain safe and efficient plant operations.
  • Monitoring ingredient tank levels and ensuring correct temperature settings are critical tasks.
  • Quality Control:
  • The operator will perform chemical tests at various stages to ensure proper saponification and maintain correct electrolyte values.
  • Testing and recording the results of the finished product, in line with established procedures, will be required.
  • The role also includes testing incoming raw materials, such as fats and oils, to ensure quality.
  • Maintenance and Safety:
  • Regular cleaning of the centrifuge and plant areas is expected, with strict adherence to safety protocols, including the use of PPE during daily tasks.

Day-to-Day Operations:

  • Plant Preparation and Shutdown:
  • The candidate will prepare the plant for operation, including warming up vessels and starting the centrifuge, and ensure the proper storage of intermediate products.
  • Responsibilities also include safely stopping the plant, conducting necessary QC tests, and leaving the plant ready for the next day's operations.
  • Communication:
  • Effective communication with the management team regarding any operational concerns is essential.
  • Flexibility:
  • When the plant is not operational, and cleaning tasks are complete, the candidate may be required to assist in other areas of the factory as needed.

Organisational Skills & Leadership:

  • The candidate should be capable of effectively communicating with management and making informed decisions on day-to-day operations. Quick and effective responses are necessary to adapt to changing conditions or breakdowns and prevent potential issues.

Candidate Profile:

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Experience with chemicals, pumps, and valves is essential.

Skills:

  • A quick learner with the ability to perform laboratory work.

  • The ideal candidate will be conscientious, detail-oriented, and possess practical common sense for effective decision-making.
