Job summary

As deputy to the head of communications, engagement and fundraising, and with a full portfolio in their own right, the postholder will be responsible for building and promoting a positive reputation for the Trust through the expert tactical deployment and continuous improvement of all Trust-related day-to-day communications activity.

The postholder will play a key role in delivering the Trust's overall communications and engagement strategy, among primarily external audiences.

The postholder will be the Trust's lead on proactive relationship management with external stakeholders, including communication partnerships within the north central London ICS, and the emerging provider alliance, and will lead on our engagement with these emerging bodies on a range of often sensitive, complex, confidential and sometimes contentious issues.

The postholder will also be the Trust's resident expert on all matters pertaining to the use of digital media, analysis, and content, providing leadership within the team and in supporting other Trust colleagues on best use of electronic communications

Duties and responsibilities of this post:

Support the head of communications, engagement and fundraising, and other senior managers, by leading delivery of a high quality external communications and stakeholder relations service for the Trust.

Build and promote positive relationships with the media, staff and key stakeholders through proactive and reactive digital communications, speaking on behalf of and representing senior personnel (including the CEO) when necessary. This may include identifying potentially hostile situations and working to ensure a positive environment for all involved.

Engage staff across the Trust and key stakeholders to develop a pipeline of positive stories which help the Trust to maintain and build upon its reputation and deliver its objectives.

Lead on developing and delivering a strategic plan of often complex communication and engagement opportunities, events, risks, and mitigations, set out in a forward-looking grid covering both short- and long-term (at least 12 months) activity, which supports ongoing delivery of the Trust's communications and engagement strategy and organisational narrative. This will include being responsible for advising senior personnel on any changes or updates to the strategic plan and the postholder will need to have a flexible approach.

Lead on digital communications for the Trust, and develop and deliver relevant tactical communications and engagement plans to support sustainable delivery of the Trust's forward-planning grid

Monitor and review Trust media and social media coverage, checking for inaccuracies and using highly-developed judgement and analytical skills, sometimes on highly complex or contentious topics, and provide expert advice to senior personnel on next steps, taking into account all options and then co-ordinating responses where appropriate.

Work flexibly with the communications team, internal and external stakeholders to ensure that Trust communications are resilient and the communications team are responsive to changing demands on the Trust.

Oversee compliance of communication materials across range of channels with accessible design principles, NHS identity requirements and local branding

Produce publications and online material of a very high quality, writing and/or editing as appropriate and liaising with printers and designers where necessary.

Support organisation of corporate events as well as coordinating VIP visits 

Provide digital communications and engagement support and advice to the Trust, including programme of training for continual improvement

Deputise for the Head of Communications, Engagement, and Fundraising when necessary.

Build relationships with communications colleagues in allied organisations within north central London, region, and wider health and care system/public sector to ensure a co-ordinated approach to social media and wider communications issues.

Contribute to the development and delivery of the Trust's communication strategy, developing and maintaining strong working relationships with the media, the public and all external stakeholders.

Devise innovative content and ideas for use across all media channels.  Develop and manage the hospital's website to keep it user friendly and current.

Contribute to communications team activity as required, particularly in relation to social and digital media channels
