Trainee Claims Handler

Full time, Temporary (up to 24 months)

We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Claims Handler to learn and develop knowledge and experience within our Claims & Insurance team. This two year training programme will provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience to apply for a Marine Claims Handler role and will also offer the opportunity to achieve the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers ‘Diploma in Liner Trades' and Lloyd's Maritime Academy ‘Certificate in Marine Claims'.

You will gain experience of handling files relating to container damage handling under the FCM (Full Container Mishandling) process. This includes creation of files, collation of documents from other departments in UK & overseas agents, recovery of costs from UK ports and maintaining databases within the Claims & Insurance department.

You will also gain experience of handling Claims which includes processing initial notification files for possible claims against MSC or recoveries from Third Parties & assisting in claims generally (Marine and non-marine). This includes creation of files, collation of documents from other departments in UK & overseas agents, recovery of costs from UK ports / Third Parties and maintaining databases within the Claims & Insurance department.

The position also has an essential administration role in monitoring procedures coming in from MSC Geneva Legal Claims & Insurance Department and ensuring these are advised to the marine claims team plus Invoice management & payment authorisation. This is a varied and, at times, a challenging role but rewarding to the right individual who wishes to use their experience & knowledge to a wide extent.

How you will help us and what you can expect

  • Creation of Themis FCM files and potentially other types of files dealt with by the department.
  • Administration and handling of all FCM files where required
  • Collate relevant documentation from other departments in UK & overseas agents, recovery of costs from UK ports and maintain communication which will include the following up of emails/telephone calls
  • To assist the Team in various aspects of the department's work
  • Updating the database as case progress
  • Complete all administrative tasks and scan all paperwork into the relevant internal systems
  • Proactively learn and apply knowledge covering insurance, risk and data protection policies and principles within a shipping context
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other departments across the business
