About the role and what we're looking for:

The aim of the Housing Needs Team is to ensure that people in housing need have access to the housing and support necessary to meet their requirements.

The Housing Allocations team play a key role in preventing and relieving homelessness.

We are now recruiting for a Lettings Assistant who will play a key role in meeting these aims by providing an efficient and effective housing service.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • to maintain accurate computer records for all housing applicants and offers of accommodation.
  • to offer advice and assistance on matters relating to the councils housing register and choice-based lettings scheme.
  • to nominate successful applicants to Registered Providers in accordance with the councils' housing allocations policy and homechoice agreement. This will include home visits.
  • assist households who are at risk of homelessness or in temporary accommodation by fast-tracking housing register assessments and supporting nominations to Registered Providers
  • accelerate the through-flow from Registered Provider temporary accommodation to long-term accommodation
  • a responsibility for liaising with the police over public safety issues concerning re-housing dangerous offenders and sex offenders.
  • to liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure appropriate support packages are in place for nominated applicants.
  • to produce statistics and reports for temporary accommodation and choice based lettings. to liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure appropriate support packages are in place for our customers in temporary accommodation.
  • assist in the implementation of new policies, procedures and legislation.
  • to attend and participate in meetings and training events as required.
  • any other duties relevant to the position and appropriate to the grading of the post.
  • The duties may vary from time to time without changing the nature of the post or the level of responsibility and the post holder may also be required to carry out any other duties appropriate to the grading of the post.

About you

Your essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • knowledge of tenancy law and housing legislation
  • knowledge of welfare rights
  • experience of dealing with vulnerable, and in some cases distressed people
  • experience of face to face contact with customers
  • ability to use IT systems, such as email, word and excel...
  • good oral and written communication skills
  • good interpersonal skills
  • understanding of confidentiality
  • experience of working well in a team

Your essential qualifications:

  • 5 GCSE's at grades A – C, including English and Mathematics, or an equivalent level of qualification
  • full driving licence and use of a car insured for business use

If you have the following experience or qualifications – it's a bonus:

  • familiarity with the district
  • experience of working in local government
  • experience of working in social housing

Work related requirements:

This role has been identified as public facing in accordance with Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2017; the requirement to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English applies.
