Job Title: Interim Lead Commercial Lawyer
Location: Midlands - Hybrid Working Pattern in line with Business Needs
Contract Type: Interim - 6 months (Potential to extend)
Rate: Competitive day rate (Inside IR35)

A forward-thinking combined authority based in the Midlands is seeking an experienced Interim Lead Commercial Lawyer to support the delivery of a number of high-profile programmes at a pivotal stage of regional transformation.

The legal team is now entering a critical phase as they expand their capacity to meet ambitious priorities. This requires extensive legal input to manage contract novations and develop new contractual frameworks that will underpin the authority's delivery model.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contract Drafting & Review: Drafting, negotiating, and reviewing a range of complex commercial contracts and agreements.
  • Legal Advice: Providing strategic legal advice on commercial, contracts, procurement, and project-related matters.
  • Compliance: Ensuring compliance with relevant laws, including public procurement regulations and internal governance requirements.
  • Dispute Resolution: Advising on and managing commercial disputes, including legal proceedings where required.
  • Project Support: Supporting major regeneration and development initiatives with robust legal guidance.
  • Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating legal and contractual risks in a public sector context.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Liaising effectively with internal teams, partners, and external stakeholders to ensure legal advice is timely and clear.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven track record in a senior commercial legal role, ideally within the public sector.
  • Experience advising on complex commercial contracts and large-scale projects.
  • Ability to work effectively in a political or highly regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of procurement law, particularly EU and UK Public Contracts Regulations.
  • Excellent drafting, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working in or with local government or combined authorities is highly desirable.
