Speech and Language Therapist

This role is based at a specialist neurological centre, in a beautiful grade II listed mansion surrounded by magnificent gardens, 10-minutes from the city centre.

Ipswich, Suffolk

Part-time, up to 22.5 hours

The centre offers fully equipped gyms and rehabilitation kitchens to support individuals to regain their daily living skills. It can accommodate up to 32 people with a variety of amenities to support their comfort and well-being, including specially adapted bathrooms, a large lounge and dining area, therapy and activity rooms, and a tranquil courtyard. Relaxation and reflection are encouraged in the beautiful walled garden, which features a serene water feature.

You would join a charity, aiming to improve the lives of people with brain injuries in the UK. The assessment centres, rehabilitation units and hospitals use expert neurorehabilitation to support people to regain the skills they have lost. You would be training people with a range of brain injuries - sustained through trauma, illness, substance abuse and more - to recover and meet their personal goals.

Main purpose:

To work as part of an multi/interdisciplinary team providing speech and language therapy (SaLT) input within the Brainkind Neurobehavioural model to People with acquired brain injury (ABI), and to lead on SaLT provision within the service.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To apply the neurobehavioural approach to brain injury, demonstrating knowledge of current research findings, and best practice in the field.
  • To manage and prioritise a caseload of People with complex mental/physical health needs and/or challenging behaviour.
  • To undertake comprehensive assessments, considering environment, context and future plans, in order to formulate appropriate rehabilitation goals, care plans, communication and dysphagia therapy programmes
  • To complete swallowing assessments, providing recommendations, care plans, onward referrals and training for all staff in the safe management and rehabilitation of dysphagia.
  • To be aware of and comply with responsibilities regarding risk management and safeguarding and look for ways to improve, taking action as required, helping others to do same.
  • To complete risk assessments and find ways to improve health and safety within work area if required.
  • To exercise duty of care in all aspects of role.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Registered with the HCPC
  • Achieved Dysphagia Competencies
  • Specialist knowledge of SaLT models and interventions in ABI e.g. social communication, cognitive communication, communication partner training.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience working with adults with neurological conditions or 4+ years post registration experience in an alternative clinical setting.
