Scientific Research and Funding Officer

Location - Cheshire

Sector - Drug Discovery

Contract - Full-time, permanent

Salary: Up to £43,000 depending on experience and interview performance.

Hybrid working: 2 days a week in the office (near Macclesfield)

Our client is a leading company, offering research services to the Drug Discovery sector. They collaborate with lead researchers and organisations to enhance the understanding of immunological, oncological, neurological and other disease areas. Based on Alderley Park, they are offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, hard-working and experienced individual to join their expanding Commercial Team to identify and leverage grant funding. If you have extensive previous experience in life science R&D and funding / grant proposal writing and contract negotiations and a passion for supporting drug discovery within the UK, then this represents a great opportunity.

The Role

This is a role for individuals with a proven track record in writing, negotiating and tracking R&D and funding proposals, working with scientific funding bodies such as Horizon Europe, Innovate UK / UKRI (formerly RCUK). It represents an opportunity to indirectly support disease and drug discovery programmes across the UK.

As a Scientific Research and Funding Officer, you will:

  • Liaise with internal research teams and functions to maximise the quality of research proposals for drug development and disease research projects with existing funding.
  • Act as a Bid Manager. You will lead the writing, tracking and negotiating of funding proposals to acquire new drug discovery and disease research programmes.
  • Work with a range of funding bodies within the UK and EU potentially including: Innovate UK, BBSRC, MRC, Horizon Europe
  • Host workshops relating to concept generation and R&D.
  • Support other teams with existing R&D projects and strategic funding bids for future research ventures.
  • Occasionally, you will support on non-grant related projects. These may include strategic documents, loans, IP evaluations etc.

Skills and Experience Needed:

Suitable applicants will have:

  • BSc, MSc or PhD, or post-doctoral qualifications within a Life Science discipline (Biology or Chemistry related). (essential, equivalent experience considered also)
  • Extensive experience in working with publicly funded research bodies and models including Innovate UK, BBSRC, MRC, Horizon Europe etc. (essential)
  • Proven experience in creating research and grant / funding proposals within the life sciences sector. (essential)
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal, written and listening to ensure efficient liaising with internal departments and external project partners. (essential)
  • Excellent organisational skills (essential)
  • Great IT skills including the full Microsoft Office suite (essential)
  • An interest within drug discovery or disease research related projects (essential)
