HGV Engineer

Alderley Park Recruitment are currently looking to recruit a HGV Mechanic. This is a permanent role, based in East Cheshire and is paying a salary of £34,000 - £36,000 DOE.

Job Purpose:

To carry out a broad range of vehicle and plant servicing, fault diagnosis, and defect rectification using specialised equipment associated with Fleet operations to meet legal responsibilities. This includes inspecting and testing vehicles to VOSA, MOT, and Taxi Licensing standards.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Undertake regular, ad hoc, and scheduled repairs, servicing, and safety inspections of HGV/LGVs and other vehicles in accordance with statutory requirements. This includes preparing all fleet vehicles for testing (ranging from HGV/LGV to small vehicles) to ensure that vehicles are serviceable and maintain the Goods Vehicle Operators Licence.
  2. Inspect other vehicles, plant, and specialist equipment to diagnose faults (mechanical/electrical/hydraulic) and carry out necessary repairs. Provide out-of-hours breakdown cover for all frontline services.
  3. Conduct MOT tests for minibuses (Class 5), cars (Class 4), and motorcycles for customers, including the general public. Carry out conformity tests as required by taxi operators licensed by the authority and other specialist tests such as LOLER upon request.
  4. Complete all necessary records relating to the inspection, service, and repair of all fleet items in line with statutory and administrative requirements. Liaise with colleagues, vehicle operatives, and managers to prioritise workloads, organise replacement parts, and/or arrange specialist support when required.
  5. Monitor and direct the activities of apprentices and other newly appointed employees to ensure they are working safely during the probationary period.
  6. Provide off-site repairs and breakdown cover as required by frontline services, including roadside attendance.

Person Specification:

Type of Knowledge | Highest Level Needed | Type of Experience Required | Qualification(s) (Only if Essential):

  • Technical or Specialist Knowledge:

  • Level 3 City & Guilds Craft Apprenticeship.

  • LOLER Competent.

  • VOSA certified MOT Tester Levels 4 & 5 (refreshed every 5 years).

  • Experience with a wide range of vehicles and equipment.

  • Technical experience and competence in a range of vehicles from small agricultural plant to HGV/LGVs used within our client's operations.

  • Ability to diagnose faults requiring high technical knowledge.

  • Completion of IRTEC Qualification.

  • Qualification: Level 3 in City & Guilds in Motor Vehicle Studies (4-Year Apprenticeship).

  • Competent Person's Certificate, i.e., LOLER Tester.

  • Theories, Techniques, Concepts:

  • Use of diagnostic equipment to determine computerised faults in vehicles.

  • Working knowledge of equipment use.

  • Procedures, Policies, Legislation, Organisational Structures:

  • Knowledge of road transport, elements of the Road Traffic Act, O Licence regulation, vehicle roadworthiness, and legislation relating to vehicles.

  • Experience: Time-served (4 years training) plus operational experience. Further training and qualifications for MOT testing.

  • Operation of Equipment and Machinery:

  • Experience with a large range of equipment, including HGV/LGVs, small and large plant, and garage lifts.

  • Keeps up to date with the latest equipment and methods.

  • Qualification: Hold an HGV Licence, Abrasive Wheels, Forklift and LOLER Tester Certificates.

  • Literacy & Numeracy:

  • Good knowledge of Maths and English for completing duties, including timesheets and service sheets.

  • Experience: Tyre pressures, oil pressure, administrative tasks such as MOT paperwork, workshop manuals.

  • Supervisory and Management Experience:

  • On-the-job supervision of apprentices when working on the shop floor.
