The energy team plays a key role helping the UK achieve its 2050 net zero target through the design and construction of power infrastructure that links up renewable energy and other low carbon power sources to the customers that need it.

The role

We are looking for a Principal Designer to be part of the Design Team in East Anglia who are responsible for production and checking of electrical transmission designs. The candidate will be working on behalf of UK Power Networks to deliver Design, Project Management, Construction, Handover & Commissioning services. This work involves construction of new electricity substations, rebuild or refurbishments or electrical equipment at voltages up to and including 132kV.

Key responsibilities;

  • Offer comprehensive advice on health, safety, environmental, and CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations to the design team, ensuring full compliance with statutory H&S standards.
  • Monitor and report on the timely completion of essential surveys, reports, investigations, and equipment specifications to optimize design efficiency and capitalize on value engineering opportunities.
  • Track design progress, identifying and reporting resource constraints as necessary.
  • Hold accountability for overseeing the execution and effectiveness of design risk assessments (HEML), ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and integrating safety into the design process.
  • Organize and conduct regular design, Value Engineering, and HEML reviews, monitoring monthly progress to meet financial targets effectively.
  • Provide CDM coordination in line with current regulations, ensuring compliance with statutory CDM requirements, including Principal Designer duties for capital programs, and across other directorates as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for compiling and submitting statutory notices for all Notifiable projects within the design team and manage subsequent updates.
  • Compile a monthly design dashboard presenting the current status of project portfolios, workloads, delivery schedules, efficiencies, and any underlying performance or design-related issues.
  • Supply accurate and up-to-date data to facilitate managerial coordination for the delivery of civil and electrical design packages, ensuring agreed-upon quality, cost adherence, P6 program alignment, and compliance with the Engineering Design Process.

The candidate

We are looking for an ambitious and dynamic individual with excellent knowledge and understanding of all key client and industry specifications.

  • Track record in design co-ordination with experience in main stream engineering construction including electrical Networks
  • Hold, or be working towards the NEBOSH Construction Certificate
  • Technical qualifications at HNC/HND or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft desktop applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, P6, ProjectWise, & Alfresco.(training may be provided where required)
  • A good safety ethos with a sound understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and their application
  • Ability to work unsupervised, set and comply with own targets, and identify and implement innovative cost saving solutions
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Be familiar with and adhere to Quality Assurance procedures and company design standards at all times
  • Hold a full valid UK driving licence
