General Tradesperson

Summary

Our Let Estate in York and on the North York Moors is varied, historically significant and interesting, ranging from a 19th century lodge through to cottages, farmhouses, modern and traditional farm buildings and city-centre retail units. The management of our let estate property, together with the relationships we have with our tenants, underpins significant rental income and is essential to the delivery of our land and property conservation work.

The working pattern is three days a week, ideally Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. No weekend working. You'll be working in different types of weather.

What it's like to work here

The majority of your work will be looking after our let properties and holiday cottages in the valley of Bransdale (YO62 7JL), which is where you will be based and where we have our workshop and estate yard. There will also be occasional travel to our let properties and holiday cottages in York, Beningbrough, Ormesby, Ravenscar and Hull, and a vehicle is available for travel to different sites.

The National Trust is the largest private landowning charity in the UK, and you will support us with the maintenance of the properties we own and protect. You, and the small team you work in, will play a vital part in improving their condition so that we can carry on owning and using these properties for ever.

If you would like to discuss the role you can contact the hiring manager Matthew Wilkinson via email on .uk

What you'll be doing

You'll carry out high quality repairs, maintenance and refurbishments to our properties across our holiday cottage and let estate portfolio. Whether it be residential, agricultural or commercial buildings, you'll be a trusted contact for our existing tenants or carrying out work in preparation to welcome new tenants. You'll know what methods and materials are needed to carry out the task in hand and will strive to use resources efficiently and effectively.

Often, you'll work alongside other trades who are contracted-in by the National Trust and you'll carry out tasks which complement their work in order to maintain, make safe or improve our properties.

You'll be proactive in your approach to risk management and ensure risk assessments are undertaken and all work is compliant with the relevant legislation and policies.

You'll work in collaboration with colleagues across the Trust and liaise with tenants so that access is arranged in advance, expectations are managed and regular updates are communicated. You'll already have a strong construction foundation; however other training will be offered based on the needs of the business. It's a small team and your workload will be incredibly varied including joinery works, full property refurbishment, roof repairs, pointing and reactive repairs – no two days will be the same and you'll need to pitch in as required.

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what's possible in this role.

Who we're looking for To deliver this role successfully, you'll need:

  • experience and skills in one or more general trades, and a willingness to work in other areas as needed by the Estate
  • an understanding of traditional buildings/structures and able to make good judgment on the appropriate extent and method of trade works within such settings
  • good time management including prioritising and managing own time to deliver agreed scope and quality of work
  • an understanding of the standards of health & safety management in your own work and when supervising others
  • good communication skills
  • excellent team player and the ability to build collaborative relationships both internally & externally
