Counsel - Litigation

Our client is seeking an attorney to join their Litigation Division as in-house counsel. This position will be based in either the Luxembourg, London, or Maidenhead office, reporting to the Litigation Manager located at the company's headquarters in Johnston, Rhode Island, USA.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing legal advice and assistance to internal departments such as Claims, Underwriting, Human Resources, Executive Management, and Engineering.
  • Managing litigation, arbitration, and the work of outside counsel across global operations. This includes hands-on management of cases, resolving matters in mediation, preparing witnesses for depositions, and attending trials as necessary.
  • Advising HR on employment-related issues, conducting internal investigations, and providing training on legal matters to internal clients.
  • Handling various legal issues that arise in connection with a global business.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 8 years of complex commercial litigation experience, preferably including trial or arbitration experience in common law or civil law jurisdictions within an EMEA country.
  • Additional experience as in-house counsel for a large corporation, managing litigation and arbitration, and advising on day-to-day legal issues is preferred.
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in insurance coverage, employment law, discrimination matters, professional liability issues, and subrogation are highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation, is highly preferred.
  • Strong writing, analytical, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate practical and actionable advice to internal clients, simplifying complex legal issues.
  • Exceptional integrity and the ability to resolve complex issues creatively.
  • A proactive self-starter who works well independently but knows when to seek guidance.
  • Effective in cross-functional teams, open-minded, inclusive, and flexible.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25% of the time.
  • Law degree (LL.B, LL.M, JD, or equivalent) and licensed as an attorney within the European Union or the United Kingdom.
