Introduction:

A vibrant and welcoming secondary school in the Burgess Hill area and committed to providing a high-quality education are currently are offering an exciting opportunity to become a Special Support Assistant in one of the country's most successful schools.

  • To provide specific support to a 17-year-old male student studying Film and Media in year 12, supporting the personal and academic needs in a 1-1 situation.

  • Key accountability 1: Supporting a specific student with a physical disability. The post is term time only.

  • Specific Duties relevant to the role of Special Support Assistant:

  • To support the student throughout the college day.

  • To scribe for the student and enable them to fully engage in the learning within the classroom.

  • To work with him 1-1 to ensure he keeps up to date with all college/ coursework.

  • To provide personal care for the student as is necessary.

  • The role also includes manual handling for the student who has severely reduced mobility (please note that personal care and manual handling training will be provided to the successful candidate).

The candidate will also be expected to fulfil the duties of a Learning Support Assistant, these include:

To be aware of student Individual Educational Plan targets and contribute to the development of these targets.

To be involved in the process of setting and evaluating student IEP targets and assist in discussing these targets with individual students.

To contribute towards the annual review of students.

To communicate effectively with students, teachers, parents and external support staff.

To liaise closely with the Learning Support Manager and the SENCo.

To work effectively with student in a 1-1 or small group seeing.

To be able to make decisions independently on the use of the resource time.

Be aware of, comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to child protection, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

Be aware and support difference and ensure equal opportunities for all.

Ensure the work of the department fully supports the overall ethos, aims and work of the College.

Knowledge/Skills

Effective use of ICT.

To be able to take handwriten notes and typed notes as directed by the student.

Excellent ability to relate well to children and adults.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Work constructively as part of a team, understanding College roles and responsibilities and the position of the role within these.

Ability to self-evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities.

Ability to represent the public face of the school.
