Main Purpose of the Job:

We are seeking a meticulous and proactive Legal Clerk to join our Commercial Law Team. This role will involve drafting traffic regulation orders, managing legal documents, and providing essential administrative support. Ideal for those with office experience or keen to gain experience in a legal environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Document Drafting: Prepare and draft standard legal documents related to Commons searches, Highways Orders, and Notices, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Document Management: Review and summarize document content for external advertising. Distribute documents to statutory bodies, Parish, and District Councils.
  • Correspondence Handling: Manage correspondence and telephone inquiries, particularly regarding objections and representations. Use judgment to escalate issues or provide explanations as necessary.
  • Liaison and Coordination: Work with the Economy and Infrastructure Directorate and Planning Inspectorate to address objections and arrange public inquiries or court hearings.
  • Administrative Support: Provide general administrative support to the Commercial Law Team, including office cover, updating the Council's website, assisting with the Law Library, sealing documents, and performing routine office tasks.
  • Financial and Legal Systems: Assist with the Council's financial systems and verify land titles as required.

Person Specification:

Qualifications/Training:

  • Essential: Good educational background, including GCSEs in English and Maths or equivalent.
  • Desirable: Evidence of continuing professional development.

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Essential: Experience with office systems and computer applications (e.g., MS Office suite).
  • Desirable: Knowledge of local government or public sector environments and experience with web content authoring.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Essential: Ability to understand and apply statutory procedures, attention to detail, strong communication skills, ability to read maps and interpret plans, good numeracy skills, and IT proficiency.
  • Desirable: Interest in law or related disciplines.
