What ASEND Tuition Is
We are looking for compassionate Tutors to support children and young people with SEND in Thurrock. We support pupils with SEND who are not attending school for a number of reasons including Mental Health issues, lack of a suitable school place or waiting for a school place. We aim to prepare them for a return to mainstream or special school.
We support pupils of all ages face-to-face within school times, and in a range of settings including homes, schools, community centres and out in the community. Our tuition is completely pupil-focused and can target developing early learning, following an academic curriculum, providing emotional support or developing life skills. We need a wide range of tutors to support our pupils and to help them meet their specific needs and ensure good progress. We work very hard to match each person with pupils who can most benefit from their skills and expertise.
About The Pupil
Our pupil is an 18 year old young man who is non-verbal autistic and experiences anxiety. He tends to display OCD type behaviours when he is feeling anxious and stressed. Recently he has been working on learning to communicate with basic Makaton and gestures, vocalisations and basic words. He also is developing his numeracy through hands-on activities. He is a charming young man with a great sense of humour and a knack for wanting to do things independently. He enjoys music and dancing, particularly nursery rhymes and his favourite artists, and playing on his iPad.
An ideal candidate for this role would be someone who is familiar with using visual timetables and using other strategies to develop non-verbal communication. Someone who is able to stick to a routine and provide a stress free environment is essential, as these are key to let this young person feel comfortable and safe. A key goal of these sessions would be to develop his independence when it comes to self-care tasks.
About you:
- You'll have experience with SEN: non-verbal ASD, severe learning difficulties and various methods of communication
- You may be an experienced tutor or teacher or have experience working with children in a therapeutic way
- You'll have a passion for helping pupils overcome any barriers to learning and difficulties with engagement
- You'll be good at building rapport and strong relationships with children and their families - we work closely with families to create a plan
- Ideally, have some experience of helping children with their learning
- Have the ability to motivate and inspire pupils
- Use a person-centred approach in their work
- Make the wellbeing, achievement, and progress of your pupils central to everything that you plan and do
- Have the determination and energy to bring about continuous improvement.
