My client is seeking an Electoral Services Officer to join their team based in Rochford, Essex. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, ensuring compliance with electoral legislation, and supporting the organisation of elections and referendums. This role is crucial in facilitating democratic participation and requires a detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of electoral registration and election processes.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Keep up to date with all relevant electoral legislation, including Individual Electoral Registration (IER).
  • Publish and maintain the annual Register of Electors and monthly updates.
  • Assess applications for inclusion on the Electoral Register, ensuring eligibility for both paper and online submissions.
  • Assist with all administrative aspects of organising elections and associated counts, including Local, County, Parliamentary, European, and Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner elections, as well as local and national referendums.
  • Organise the booking, allocation, and delivery of equipment and supplies to polling stations across the District.
  • Handle enquiries from candidates, agents, and elected members on electoral registration and election processes.
  • Provide advice to the public on absent voting applications, registration applications, and purchase of the Register.
  • Supervise public access to the register to ensure confidentiality of personal data.
  • Maintain the election staff database and assist in the recruitment and selection of temporary staff for election duties.
  • Operate the electoral registration and electoral management computer system, including applying upgrades.
  • Assist with the delivery of training courses to staff and Members.
  • Maintain the electoral services area of the Council's website.
  • Be proactive in developing and implementing projects to improve participation in the democratic process.
  • Undertake other projects as required and directed by the Assistant Director.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in electoral services or a similar role.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in using electoral registration and electoral management systems.
  • Experience in project management and implementation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
