Environmental Health Officer

We are working with a local authority who are recruiting for 2 competent registered Environmental Health Officers to join the Public Health - Public Protection Team.

The purpose of the role is to provide a corporately responsible and accessible environmental health service, which delivers legislative enforcement, advice and education to promote and secure an enhanced sustainable and safe environment for the area.

The first ideal candidate will work undertaking food safety inspections, complaint investigations, Infectious disease notification investigations.

The second will specialise in health and safety and pollution control work, conducting accident investigations and pollution complaint investigations and environmental permitting work.

Location: Southwest based Authority

Set-up: Hybrid -2-3 days on-site

Duration: 6-month initial contract, likely extension

Hours: Full-time position

Rate: £45 per day, Inside IR35

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and collect data - survey and inspection of premises, investigation of incidents, accidents and processes, measurement of a variety of environmental factors etc.
  • Evaluate and appraise collected data - assessing and prioritising levels of risk and comparing with standards (current legislation, regulations, codes of practice, good practice guidance, etc.)
  • Use appropriate legal powers - in the collection and presentation of evidence, the serving of legal notices or making of orders, seizure of equipment or goods etc.
  • Specify, schedule and supervise
  • Communicate with members of the public and others - to respond effectively to complaints, explain legislative standards, mediate between conflicting individuals and groups etc.
  • To collaborate with businesses - to develop and improve joint projects/ways of working, such as with acting as Primary Authority Manager, acting as main contact, attending meetings etc.
  • Prepare and present written reports to colleagues
  • Monitor and assess own caseload
  • Assisting in the training of other colleagues
  • Analyse and interpret legislation

Qualifications and Education:

  • Degree/Diploma in Environmental Health and be registered with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health
  • Considerable post qualification Environmental Health practice experience with a good knowledge and understanding of Environmental Health issues, including legislation regulation
  • Detailed experience of the effective delivery of one of the following Environmental Health specialisms: Food safety/Health & safety/Housing/Pollution control, Port Health, Infectious Disease Control
  • Ability to apply effectively & appropriately in practical situations, theoretical knowledge of Environmental Health
  • Good communication & presentational skills and ability and confidence to deal with difficult, sensitive and confrontational situations
