GIS Geographic Information System Specialist

What you'll be doing:

  • Assist in the design, specification and implementation of existing and future GIS systems, spatial databases, and maximise the use of GIS by delivering easy to use, accessible systems.
  • Maintain and manage the webmap services ensuring the regular update of the webmaps, the right user permissions are set up with the ability for ‘end-users' to self-serve.
  • Provide complex GIS data analysis, visualisations and insights for a wide range of internal and external clients.
  • Lead in the coordination & prioritisation of GIS requests in relation to key projects across the business.
  • Work with the BI Projects Team Leader to raise staff awareness of GIS usage across the group explaining the benefits of GIS in simplistic non-technical terms.
  • Help design and run training sessions on using GIS across the group to aid in raising awareness, building the skillsets of colleagues on using GIS effective so they can self-serve when appropriate.
  • Assist with keeping Great Places own data up to date, as well as maximising the use of external datasets (such as OS Open Data, full national OS datasets) in line with any existing frameworks/partner agreements and other key demographic datasets.
  • Being an advocate of the creation of a data culture across the business where it is unacceptable for data to be incomplete or incorrect.
  • Providing support to corporate projects (customer feedback, procurement, equality and diversity, value for money, etc.).
  • Collaborating with data owners and subject matter experts across the Group to support the design, development and building of appropriate tools to present routine spatial data analysis.
  • Supporting the Business Intelligence (BI) Team to adhere to the Group's Performance Management Framework and operational management of the business.
  • Providing bespoke analysis and technical expertise in appropriate analysis and visualisation techniques to support colleagues across the business with scrutinising data.
  • Escalating issues with data accuracy or system usage to the appropriate channel to ensure prompt and satisfactory resolution.
  • Interpreting operational and strategic BI requirements to identify and mine relevant data sources and advise colleagues on improvement opportunities.
  • Assisting with the testing and development of various data management / visualization systems (PowerBI/GIS) from their design to delivery and implementation.
  • Act on your own initiative and use GIS techniques to solve complex database / mapping processes.
  • Ensuring the robust & reliable management of spatial & other data in line with Great Places Information Management Policy.
  • Carrying out other duties as reasonably required.

What you'll need:

  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Previous experience in a GIS-related role.
  • Proficiency in GIS desktop software (Cadcorp SIS, QGIS, ESRI) and data management.
  • Numerical skills with the ability to analyse data and statistics.
  • The ability to translate user requirements into working solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills .
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as using your own initiative and time management skills to deliver tasks on time.
  • Keen eye for detail, an inquisitive mind, and good organisational skills.
  • Excellent level of ICT skills including the full range of Microsoft applications and the ability to use technology such as a mobile phone, tablet and laptop.
  • Proficiency in PowerBI would be desirable.
  • Understanding and knowledge of SQL would be desirable.
  • A clean UK driving licence and access to a car would be desirable.
