Mechanical Design Manager

Responsible for all mechanical related engineering activities, meeting specifications, producing detailed drawings, and ensuring engineering best practice for the transformer business. This role plays a pivotal part within the Transformer Engineering Team coordinating the activities for Mechanical Engineering, whilst working closely with Electrical Engineering and all other related functions to support the end-to-end process.

Main Responsibilities

  • Responsibility for the day-to-day management and development of the Mechanical Engineering team to understand contract specifications, convert requirements into drawing schemes and issue for procurement, manufacture & test.
  • Develop a flexible team capable of supporting the succession and growth plans
  • Using project management philosophies, and in conjunction with the Projects team, recognise the weekly delivery requirements, and ensure capabilities and capacity to delivery against them.
  • Engage with upstream internal suppliers, including Commercial Operations, and down stream delivery including Supply Chain and Manufacturing and Test.
  • Drive best practice and continuous improvement within the team
  • Develop the team for succession and talent growth.
  • Support the development of and subsequent management and reporting of the engineering budget.
  • Develop RoadMap projects to address improvement activities of the business.
  • Lead key investigations determining root cause and resulting CAPA actions.
  • Support H&S awareness across the site to drive down the number of accidents and near misses.
  • Support the manufacturing business for fault finding, and rectifications.
  • Ensure the business has the correct tools, software, that are fit for purpose.
  • Develop a working environment based on the BRUSH values.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • A degree or HNC background in a Mechanical Engineering related discipline.

Skills

  • Detailed understanding of Transformer mechanical engineering
  • Ability to work under own initiative creating project plans, milestones and deliver on time in full.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic environment
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Have a disciplined and enthusiastic approach, that captures the commitment of others

Knowledge

  • Understanding of engineering drawings and manufacturing processes
  • Good IT skills in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project
  • Knowledge of quality systems
  • Working knowledge of business systems
  • Lean Manufacturing knowledge
  • Detailed understanding of ISO9001:2015
  • Understanding of ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001

Experience

  • Experience in a transformer mechanical engineering environment.
