Main Purpose
The Director of Finance and Business Operations oversees financial strategy, compliance, and staff leadership to support educational excellence. This role provides financial oversight and strategic insight to the Senior Leadership Team, trustees, and stakeholders to ensure effective resource management.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership
- Lead financial strategy, compliance, and sustainability efforts.
- Advise on financial matters, strategic risks, and funding compliance.
- Oversee financial procedures, risk management, legal, and governance matters.
- Prepare and manage budgets, financial forecasts, and reports.
- Coordinate with auditors and manage annual audits.
- Lead financial administration for non-curricular activities and income generation.
Governance & Compliance
- Act as Company Secretary and oversee governance and legal compliance.
- Serve as Data Protection Lead and manage health and safety protocols.
Operational Leadership
- Supervise support staff, including IT, Estates, Finance, and Lettings.
- Maximise income generation and manage external partnerships.
- Lead sustainability initiatives and manage compliance with environmental goals.
Procurement & Contract Management
- Oversee service contracts, procurement, and asset management.
Payroll & HR Support
- Oversee payroll processes and compliance with pension regulations.
- Support HR with the financial administration of staff processes.

- Develop new income opportunities, manage charitable activities, and oversee lettings.
Essential Criteria
Experience & Skills
- Extensive experience in financial and operational management within educational or complex organisations, especially an academy.
- Experience with compliance, risk management, and procurement.
- Strong staff management skills and proven capability in budget production and monitoring.
- Excellent knowledge of safeguarding and regulations in education.
- Proven expertise with financial systems (e.g., SIMS, Access, VERA).
- Ability to drive income generation and manage payroll processes effectively.
Qualifications
- Qualified accountant (e.g., ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or School Business Management certification.
- Undergraduate degree with evidence of CPD.
