Embedded Electronic and Software Engineer

The Role

Our client produce a wide variety of automotive electronic modules including ultrasonic alarm systems, body control modules, dashboard displays and gearbox control systems. As part of the engineering team based in Basingstoke, the embedded electronic and software engineer owns the design, validation and productionisation of (primarily) automotive electronics modules throughout the whole lifecycle of the product. The role also encompasses introduction of new products into production, including creating build documentation packs, work instructions and testing regimes. This role is offered on-site alongside assistance if relocation is required.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate for this role will be organised and disciplined, adept at prioritising multiple projects and activities. They will have a broad skillset focused around embedded software and electronic design but also comfortable with the other technical aspects surrounding that design, such as mechanical implementation and production test. They will have experience in building technical relationships with customers and suppliers and work with them to resolve issues or improve designs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Full lifecycle development from initial concept through to productionisation (minimum five years' experience)
  • Requirements capture and analysis
  • Embedded Software development in C
  • Digital and Analogue Electronics development for sensors and automotive control units
  • Driving verification and validation activities, in-house and externally
  • PC Software development and maintenance of existing software
  • Configuration management and documentation control
  • Working in accordance with company quality standards including ISO9001, IATF 16949 and ISO14001

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Degree in electronics/software engineering or similar
  • Automotive background, or other regulated industry with familiarity of automotive standards and legislation
  • Experience of completing several full electronics products (HW and SW) life-cycle developments
  • Coding, testing and documenting low-level drivers of MCU peripherals
  • Strong knowledge of hardware and software aspects of communication buses such as CAN, LIN, SPI, I2C, etc.
  • Well-structured and documented coding techniques, preferably using MISRA C
  • Sensor design and signal conditioning techniques
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout (ideally in Altium)
  • Design for EMC and environmental testing, with experience of managing test houses and resolving compliance issues
  • Bare-metal bring-up of microprocessor/microcontrollers and supporting hardware
  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills
  • Design for manufacture and test with familiarity in modern PCB assembly and test techniques
  • Strong IT literacy on Windows based PCs
  • Teamwork and excellent communication skills internally and with customers
  • Have full rights to work in the UK.
  • Be able to travel nationally and abroad, when required, to support customers.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with Mechanical Design Tools such as CATIA or SolidWorks
  • Experience in Model-based development and automatic code generation
  • Familiarity with SQL Databases
  • Awareness of Cyber Security standards and implementation
  • Awareness of AUTOSAR development environment
  • Hardware and software functional safety design and validation under ISO26262
  • Failure mode and Reliability Analysis
  • PC Software development in C# or Visual Basic
  • Production test equipment design and lifetime support
