SEMH Teaching Assistant

Hays Recruitment are proud to be working in partnership with an Ofsted rated "Good" primary school in the Widnes area as they require a reliable and motivated Teaching Assistant to support a student in Year 5 with SEMH. This is an on-going contract with an immediate start available. This role will be extended into next academic year.

Your new role
In your new role as an SEN Teaching Assistant you will be supporting a Year 5 pupil with SEMH on a 1:1 basis. You will be the pupils' main point of contact throughout the school day, meeting them at the school gate and walking them back to their parents/guardians at the end of the day. You will promote their engagement during lessons by effectively using distraction techniques and by teaching invaluable coping mechanisms and skills for de-stress, antianxiety, and anger coping. You will promote positive behaviours by effectively managing behaviours that can challenge by identifying trigger points and either de-escalate or remove the trigger. You will liaise with the class teacher, SENCO and parents/guardians on the pupils' progress and EHCP.

What you'll need to succeed
To be considered for this position, you must have full "Right to Work" in the UK as well as a minimum of 40 days referenceable experience working with children and/or young people in the last 2 years, as well as:

  • Previous experience working with EBD or SEMH
  • The ability to build strong constructive relationships with pupils and colleagues
  • The ability to take a person centred approach to learning
  • An NVQ/QCF Level 2 or equivalent qualification in supporting teaching and learning is advantageous but not essential
