About the Role: Senior Highway Engineer - Major Transport Infrastructure Delivery Team

As a Senior Highway Engineer, you will be a key part of the Major Transport Infrastructure Delivery Team, responsible for delivering essential transport infrastructure projects across Lancashire. Reporting to the Engineering Team Leader, your role will focus on developing and implementing highway schemes within a multi-disciplinary team. You will work independently on smaller projects and assist the Team Leader on larger ones.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Scheme Development & Delivery: Lead the development of highway schemes, from concept to construction, covering all project phases including optioneering, feasibility, design, approvals, procurement, and construction.
  • Documentation & Design: Prepare essential project documents such as drawings, schedules, cost estimates, and tender/contract documents.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with team members throughout the development of transport infrastructure schemes.
  • Quality & Standards: Ensure designs adhere to industry standards and best practices, utilizing tools like AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Technical Input: Provide technical guidance and design expertise, and oversee the work of junior staff to ensure high-quality outcomes.
  • Problem Solving: Identify challenges in transport infrastructure and design effective solutions.
  • Compliance: Ensure that all projects comply with Health & Safety, Environmental, and Quality standards.

About You:

  • Education & Experience:
  • A degree in Engineering or equivalent academic qualification, or substantial vocational experience in the field.
  • Significant experience in engineering design and design management, particularly in transport infrastructure projects.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • Proficiency in design solutions for traffic and local road challenges (e.g., alignment, drainage, pavement, road signs).
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and other design tools.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and safety regulations, including CDM responsibilities.
  • Skills:
  • Strong problem-solving ability, using both creative and methodical approaches.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, capable of handling complex projects with shifting deadlines.
  • Team Leadership: Experience in leading project design and mentoring junior staff.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage project risks, escalate issues when necessary, and deliver projects on time, within budget, and to a high standard.
