The owner of this SME friendly, family run business showed me the monthly accounts which they are currently being given, and with which they are unhappy. I know from seeing them that there will be so much opportunity for you to add value and help the Directors, that this will definitely be a very rewarding role to have taken on.
The areas you will be able to have a real impact will be:
- The monthly management accounts. These leave a lot to be desired. There is currently no breakdown of any of the figures and the Directors feel that they can not rely on them to be correct. Your priority will be to establish how much these figures can be trusted and to develop a comprehensive and trustworthy management accounts pack.
- Development of meaningful, transparent reporting to assist the Directors with the running of the business
- Looking at how their system is being used (SAP) and whether it can be made more effective in running the business
- Developing budgets and forecasts - currently the business just has a cashflow
- Communicating regularly with the Directors and providing finance information they request in a timely manner
- Working and communicating effectively with other areas of the business eg sales
- Managing and mentoring a team of 2 finance staff
- Working to ensure the best exchange rates are obtained
- VAT Returns
- Statutory accounting
- Overseeing payroll
Ideally, you will be a technically strong, qualified accountant with excellent problem solving and communication skills. You will enjoy working in a friendly, supportive team with Directors, who care about their staff.
