The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers is one of the UK's largest trade unions.

A vacancy exists for Deputy Head of Media and Communications based at the Union's Head Office.

There are no set hours for this position. The postholder will be expected to be adaptable and flexible to meet the needs of the job, which will include working outside of normal office hours and travelling to any part of the UK which may involve overnights at short notice.

The principal duties are: under the general supervision of the Head of Media and Communications, to participate as part of a management team in the strategic direction and development of the work of the Department to ensure the provision of a full and comprehensive media and communications service to the Union; to assist in the management and development of the staff in the Media and Communications Department; to deputise for the Head of Media and Communications in their absence as necessary.

The successful applicant will possess: knowledge of contract management, procurement and purchasing; knowledge of event management and co-ordination; commercial awareness and budget/cost management know how; the ability to motivate and manage staff; the ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines and possess well-developed planning and organisational skills; the ability to respond to change, and be adaptable and flexible to the changing needs of the job and the Union.
