As a Packaging Technologist you will work in a cross-functional project team to deliver exciting new packaging solutions to agreed time, cost and CSR standards. You will use your extensive packaging technical knowledge and expertise working with our suppliers to develop product packaging, artwork and brand visual identity which delights consumers and drives growth for Boots and Exclusive Brands.

About the role

You will form part of a team of fantastic Packaging Technologists reporting to Boots Packaging Technology Manager operating within the Technical Services function of Boots UK.

The role provides the opportunity to work on a fast moving and diverse portfolio of Boots own label & Exclusive brands, product classifications and categories. You will support our Beauty, General Merchandise & Healthcare business units. The team specialise in Cosmetics, Seasonal Gift, Health & Wellness packaging development. Products are developed and sourced through Boots European & Asian supplier base with critical focus on meeting Boots minimum packaging sustainability requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for ensuring delivery of required packaging specification from our suppliers, optimal Brand visual identity - colour & artwork management activities on New Product Development projects, product lifecycle maintenance of existing products in collaboration with 3rd party service providers to meet our consumer, category & brand requirements
  • Uses high level of packaging expertise to optimise specification, challenge thinking and ensure the best, optimal product design, artwork & brand look & feel.
  • All stakeholders are expertly managed to ensure on time delivery within project and sku level cost & quality parameters
  • Accountable for quality of data and accuracy for all system inputs & processes
  • Conducts all necessary due diligence working to Boots Technical and Sustainability standards and is accountable for identifying and effectively managing packaging technical risks
  • Prepares written reports from testing and validation activity
  • Accountable for packaging product lifecycle management including investigating customer complaints, managing technical responses & resolution
  • Identifying and delivering ongoing packaging and technical process improvement to continuously increase effectivity and efficiency of our activities

What you'll need to have

  • Experienced in the delivery of branded consumer products with packaging specialism
  • Proven track record of managing end-to-end packaging development from 2D/3D design concept to market, ideally within own label or FMCG environment
  • Excellent knowledge of key packaging technologies, design for manufacture, testing/validation, component tooling, artwork management, repro/origination & print processes.
  • This will include a good understanding of packaging & supply chain cost drivers & how to apply Lean design principles i.e., identify relevant consumer packaging/product requirements to drive efficiency across the value chain.
  • Understanding of packaging materials, sustainability & how this translates to optimal packaging for a consumer product.
  • Proven ability to manage risk, prioritise effectively and co-ordinate activities & deadlines for complex technical projects.
