Assistant Gardener

Summary As Assistant Gardener, you'll be working with a team to deliver the day-to-day care of the garden and maintain high presentation standards. This role will include a range of practical tasks to develop, improve and look after the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. What it's like to work here

You'll join the garden team which includes a Head Gardener, Senior Gardener, Gardener and three Assistant Gardeners. There are also approximately 50 volunteers some hands on and others who are garden guides.

There will be opportunities to work at and visit other NT and non-NT properties and the national Trust offers a wide range of practical and on-line courses to help with personal and professional development.

Hardwick Hall is located near Junction 29 of the M1 in between Mansfield and Chesterfield. The majority of the gardens date from 1832 onwards and are made up of 4 courtyards surrounding the mansion. The garden is 18.5 acres in size. It contains formal borders, orchards, lawns, specimen trees, winter border, herb garden and a winter offer in the form of a winter border and Stumpery. We have a nursery that grows plants for the garden and sales. We also look after three holiday cottage gardens and the garden at Stainsby Mill.

What you'll be doing Daily responsibilities may include assisting with the planting and maintaining of shrub and borders, mulching, hedge cutting and lawn mowing. You'll work alongside Gardeners and a team of volunteers. You'll talk to the public every day, answering a variety of garden-related questions and talking about what you are doing with pride. We're looking for someone with a practical approach to work, getting the day-to-day work done and a passion for plants. The role can sometimes be physically challenging, and we use a wide range of machinery and equipment to help us get our work done. The use of machinery such as tractors, hedge trimmers and pedestrian mowers is essential, but training will be provided. Who we're looking for
