Head of Environmental Compliance

My client's energy solutions tackle energy dilemmas head-on, facilitating the UK's shift to a low-carbon economy. Each of their projects provides essential power and services to the National Grid, as well as to industrial and commercial clients. Supported by a global investor in energy and infrastructure, they are the UK's largest owner and operator of flexible power plants, with 900MW currently operational and over 1GW in the early stages of development. To put this into perspective, they can already supply power for an hour to approximately 1.8 million homes, with an additional 2 million homes in the pipeline.

Your new role

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring environmental compliance is adhered to across the Company's portfolio of sites (including flexible power generation, BESS, wind and solar) sites
  • Accountable for the management of statutory environmental permit requirements, such as but not limited to, emissions monitoring and reporting
  • Responsible for the maintenance of UK-ETS permits and procedures, including annual verifications
  • Ensuring all new sites in development or construction obtain statutory environmental permits in line with key project timescales
  • Providing key input intothe portfolio carbon reporting procedures (ESOS, ISO 50001 etc.)
  • Managing variations to existing environmental permits that may be required
  • Maintaining and establishing long-term relationships with environmental regulators and third-party consultants
  • Act as internal expert on environmental legislation and regulation and improve environmental awareness throughout the business
  • Representing the business at workshops, industry forums and working groups as required
  • Carrying out internal environmental auditing and host audits of our sites by the Regulators
  • Responsibility for assessing new and changing environmental legislation and providing responses to key government consultations
  • Be a key consultee at relevant design process meetings, attending and providing input at all stages of the design process and lifecycle of projects.
  • Working closely with key internal stakeholders on all environmental matters
  • Travel will be required as part of the role, therefore own transport is essential with occasional overnight stays if necessary
  • Managing one direct report who will assist with the above responsibilities

What you need to succeed

  • Degree in a relevant field
  • Membership (or working towards) of a relevant professional body (i.e. IEMA, IES, IAQM etc.)
  • Proven experience in environmental management and compliance practices
  • Demonstrable experience in managing environmental permitting processes, preferably with MCP's and specified generators
  • Demonstrable experience in analysing complex analytical environmental datasets
  • Greenhouse gas calculation and reporting experience would be desirable
  • Competent knowledge of the environmental permitting regulations (installation, Medium Combustion Plants (MCPD), Specified Generators and Flood Risk Activities)
  • Competent with new and evolving environmental legislation and policy
  • Good general knowledge of low carbon technologies and renewable energy technologies
  • Managing multiple projects under tight time deadlines
  • Self-motivated, with diligence, integrity, and ambition
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Capable of understanding technical concepts and explain effectively to key stakeholders
