Summary

As an Engagement Ranger, you're the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You're a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you'll play a crucial role in keeping the nation's beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

This position is based at the National Trusts Llanerchaeron Estate, Ceredigion and will be an integral part of a small delivery team working on the Butterflies and Bell Flower Project, a Nature Networks Fund project which is funded by Welsh Government and administered by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This is a full-time role, 37.5hrs per week and the contract runs for 22 month (May 2026). You will need to be flexible as some of the work may be out of normal hours to accommodate community involvement, eg weekends or evening meetings.

What it's like to work here

Rhos Cwm Saeson, Ynys Lochtyn and Cwm Soden are all SSSI sites and cover some of the best habitat and landscapes that Ceredigion has to offer. Our sites are visited by thousands of visitors who visit and walk the Wales Coastal Path every year not to mention they are places very close to the hearts of the local community who often become good advocates and the eyes and years for the trust on these important sites.

What you'll be doing

The focus of the project is to deliver identified habitat improvement work to three of our sites for key flora and fauna species that are present. This will be achieved through contract work and engagement activities with local communities, recruiting new volunteers and other likeminded groups to help deliver the projects objectives. You'll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. You'll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you'll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.

As well as broad knowledge and practical experience of habitat management and conservation you will need to be an engaging and positive team player with a passion for learning and sharing that knowledge with the local community, volunteers and staff alike. At Interview you will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to engage and lead communities in working for nature on their doorstep, you will need to demonstrate how you would raise awareness of the importance of sensitive sites for nature sites and the need to manage them as well as fostering a sense of ownership and desire in the local community to protect these vulnerable habitats, flora and flora.

You will need a clear track record of working with stakeholders and partners such as Local Nature Partnership group, Butterfly Conservation Trust and Natural Resource Wales as the project is one which can only be successfully delivered in partnership. You will be working alongside the Area Ranger and Countryside Manager to prepare work programmes and arrange workdays for the various groups and be responsible for promoting those activities and recording them for social media and communication events. You will also be supporting the Farm Manager to assess conditions for the introduction of cattle and ponies for conservation grazing purposes at our sites.
