Job Title: Head of English for Speakers of Other Languages (Head of ESOL)

Location: South London

Pay: £300 per day umbrella

Contract Type: Full-Time, 3 month initial contract

Job Summary: The Head of ESOL will be responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the ESOL department. This includes developing and implementing innovative teaching strategies, overseeing curriculum development, and ensuring high standards of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with staff, students, and parents to support the academic and personal growth of English language learners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the planning, development, delivery, and monitoring of the ESOL curriculum to ensure efficient, effective, and compliant delivery.
  • Ensure the curriculum aligns with funding regulations and quality standards.
  • Act as line manager for tutors, assessors, and Internal Quality Assurers (IQAs), overseeing performance objectives and conducting performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with the College marketing team to build relationships with new stakeholders and partners, focusing on income growth for ESOL programs.
  • Maintain accurate data and records, ensuring timely submission of required documentation with the support of relevant staff.
  • Manage the departmental budget, including staffing budgets, in line with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Work closely with the Director of Curriculum and Curriculum Leader to ensure high-quality provision, strong retention, and achievement rates through college quality systems and procedures.
  • Manage and monitor the self-assessment process and update the quality improvement plan for the ESOL department, conducting termly reviews.
  • Develop the ESOL department to meet the Education Inspection Framework 2019 requirements, ensuring the department is always 'Inspection Ready'.
  • Conduct audit checks, including Internal Verification and Moderation, to ensure high standards within the department.
  • Ensure effective integration of Learning Support into ESOL courses.
  • Oversee the timely submission of course examination, assessment, and validation requirements for Adult Community Learning (ACL), Further Education (FE) provision, and Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA).
  • Supervise a group of Tutors, IQAs, and Assessors.

To be successful:

  • A recognized teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, QTS, TESOL, CELTA).
  • A degree in English, Education, Linguistics, or a related field.
  • Significant experience teaching ESOL students at various levels.
  • Proven leadership experience within an educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of ESOL curriculum development and assessment.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, developing, and delivering ESOL programs.
  • Experience in managing and developing staff, including conducting performance reviews.
  • Familiarity with funding regulations and compliance requirements for educational programs.
  • Experience in managing budgets and resources effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • A commitment to inclusive education and understanding of cultural diversity.
  • Experience with quality assurance processes, including self-assessment, internal verification, and audit checks.
  • Knowledge of integrating Learning Support into courses.
