The role would suit individuals with experience in research and development (R&D) or academic settings, where innovation and continuous learning are highly valued. Our staff are tech-savvy, and this role's primary responsibilities include maintaining our existing systems, collaborating with engineering teams to establish new systems for upcoming projects, and providing occasional support for common issues such as password resets.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating a keen enthusiasm for acquiring new skills. They will serve as the main point of IT contact in the absence of the IT Manager, requiring a proactive and responsible approach to identifying and mitigating potential issues before they arise. A security-first mindset is paramount, with all tasks and processes executed in adherence to company security policies.

The environment:

Our infrastructure includes Windows laptops managed in collaboration with the parent company, a small number of Windows servers for specialized applications, and a larger number of engineering systems predominantly running on Linux distributions like Red Hat and Ubuntu.

Hardware is varied with some custom systems for GPUs, FPGAs, etc. depending on engineering project and simulation requirements. We maintain a suite of applications including Jenkins, Confluence, JIRA, Subversion, Git, Zabbix, and Ansible, on Linux servers. These systems are currently on-premises, with plans to transition to Microsoft Azure. The role also involves maintaining network hardware such as firewalls, switches, and Wi-Fi APs, requiring a solid understanding of LAN/WAN networks and troubleshooting network services like DNS, DHCP, NFS, SAMBA, and SSH.

The candidate:

We are seeking a candidate with good experience across both Linux and Windows operating systems. The candidate should exhibit advanced proficiency in the Linux shell, with experience configuring network interfaces, firewalls, managing software packages, performing OS upgrades, etc.

Experience with Microsoft cloud services, M365, SharePoint and troubleshooting problems remotely on Win10/11 systems is highly desirable.

Familiarity with Windows Active Directory, GPOs, and PowerShell is also desirable.
