Description

The communication and engagement officer has responsibility for delivering strategic communications activities which support the council's public realm service.

The role is involved in devising and delivering campaigns and activities that look to change behaviours, perceptions and attitudes of residents and staff.

A key part of the role is looking for new and innovative ways to communicate and engage with residents, staff and other key stakeholders that make an impact and provide excellent value for money.

Role specific accountabilities:

This will involve:

  • Designing, implementing and evaluating internal and external communications, campaigns and strategic communication activity to meet an agreed set of outcomes and measures.
  • Managing all aspects of a campaign or major communications activity - delivering communications (including engagement) to residents, staff and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Managing any budget allocated to campaigns and strategic communication activity, ensuring effective monitoring and reporting to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensuring the co-ordination of campaigns and internal/external communication activity within the wider team at all times.
  • Ensuring SMART evaluation is integrated into all work and monitored to improve communication and engagement delivery as required.
  • Supporting the communications service to deliver award winning campaign activity.
  • Playing a lead role in shaping the tone, content and mode of delivery of key messages to different audiences
  • Ensuring that all internal and external communications and campaigns are properly integrated with council priorities - deciding on where to make the most of joining up with other activities and campaigns.
  • Ensuring the consistent and accurate delivery of key council messages across a varied demographic with different needs.
  • Deciding on the best tactics to use to engage, inform and educate residents and staff about the council's key corporate priorities.
  • Working with peers across the communications and engagement service to identify and develop the most effective channels and tools for corporate communications activities and campaigns - ensuring key messages are delivered effectively, have a positive impact and are fully evaluated.
  • Actively researching and gathering intelligence on corporate developments and achievements in order to promote them through a range of channels.
  • Keeping up to date on current thinking in communications and engagement, especially digital and social media, sharing this knowledge with colleagues and applying to campaigns, communications and engagement activities.
  • Thinking ahead and identifying key issues for the council on an ongoing basis, advising and sharing with team and other stakeholders accordingly and to developing specific communications and engagement plans where necessary.
  • Working with colleagues in the communications and engagement team to monitor, research and report on perceptions of residents and staff to campaigns, communications and engagement activities.
  • Providing expert advice to members, chief officers and senior managers on how to leverage the greatest impact when communicating key corporate priorities to different audiences across resident and staff groups.
