About the role

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Lead Engineer to join our Product (ResourceLink) Core development team. This team is responsible for delivering mission-critical payroll software to Zellis customers and is made up of a group of multi disciplined experts, including Engineers and QA.

We're looking for an ambitious, dynamic leader to join our team, and although this is a well-established team with strong Agile processes in place, we encourage new ideas and concepts to be explored and adopted.

This is a hybrid position based in Bristol. We're committed to your flexibility and wellbeing and our hybrid strategy currently requires two days a week in the office, giving you the option to work remotely for some of your working week, which can be negotiated depending on your location and circumstances.

As a key member of our team, you'll play a vital role leading several developments within your team per release, where you'll act as a mentor and give direction while supporting the Engineering Manager in department wide objectives. Technologies used are a mix of Java and ProIV (a proprietary development framework).

You'll provide leadership and day-to-day line management for a team of Engineers and Test Engineers. You'll take responsibility for Engineering velocity (burndown rate of the backlog), and the quality of the product area they cover. You'll spend most of your time coaching and managing the team, specifically developing individual attributes, observing, and providing feedback.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Motivating and engaging your team across the employee lifecycle, ensuring all people processes are happening including the recruitment of new team members, setting objectives, coaching and recognising individuals to reach their potential, and dealing with any performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Facilitating the delivery of high-quality software solutions that are both stable and resilient.
  • Working collaboratively with key stakeholders across the business to ensure the successful execution and seamless delivery of new releases - from requirement review to design, development, QA, walkthrough, and delivery using Agile methodology (MS ADO).
  • Focusing on innovation, quality, and productivity to uplift the delivery capability.
  • Providing estimates and producing delivery plans, followed by regular updates with stakeholders to ensure the design/solution is on the track. As a development owner, you'll work closely with the QA Lead (reporting to you) responsible for production of the manual and automated tests based on our adopted QA process and guidelines, ensuring all components of the development perform as expected.
  • Collaborating with other Lead Engineers, Engineering Managers and Product Managers to ensure the successful execution and seamless delivery of new releases.
  • Appropriately flagging any issues and plans to address to the Engineering Manager to demonstrate ownership of resolution.
  • Representing the team in weekly shiproom meetings, using these as an opportunity to clear obstacles to the team's progress and success.
  • Providing 2nd line support to the ResourceLink Support team ensuring our SLAs are met.
  • Ensuring strict procedures are followed when accessing customer systems and work items created for fixes supplied.
  • Providing additional project resource to the ResourceLink Bespoke & Enhancement teams as and when required.

Skills & experience

What you will bring to the role:

You'll be a proactive and driven individual, who is ambitious and excels when overcoming challenges. You'll be comfortable taking accountability to lead a team of driven individuals, to inspire, motivate and empower the team to tackle what's ahead. You'll be a great mentor within the team, promoting best practice to continually raise standards and challenge team members to look for their own solutions.

You'll have a strong background in development and a passion for making a change, trying new ideas and developing your team further, to break down boundaries and lead through change and adversity.

You'll be someone who has been a Development Team Lead or had exposure to line management previously, looking to take the next step in your career.

Desired skills:

  • Experience of working within the HR & Payroll software/service industry.
  • Experience of leading Engineering teams of between 10 and 20 Engineers.
  • Demonstrable experience overcoming challenges with development (e.g. people, quality, productivity challenges, etc).
  • Experience of either ProIV, VIP (or equivalent software package) - but not essential.
  • Experience of relational database, preferably Oracle and/or MS SQL Server.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps (ADO).
  • Experience of Agile Development Process.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workloads as necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to follow and suggest improvements to procedures.
  • Knowledge of ResourceLink is advantageous but not essential**.**
