Job description

Are you an experienced Engineer eager to advance your career by contributing to DE&S most sophisticated and advanced warship to date? Would you be interested in the opportunity to work on military platforms and systems?

This is an opportunity to be a key member of the Ship Acquisition Type 26 Global Combat Ship (T26 GCS) team. This ship is the latest in a long line of maritime capability generation for the Royal Navy.?With a multi-role mission bay and a flight deck capable of landing a range of large helicopters, it will provide the capability and flexibility to compete in both modern and future threat environments.?

As our Hull and Outfit Engineering Manager, you will manage the hull and outfit teams who are witnessing activity associated with the acceptance and contractual approval of the vessels being built on the Clyde. You will lead the team to oversee the acceptance and assurance of the hull and outfit of the ships through the various stages of outfit and through to ship handover in preparation for the commencement of commissioning activities and contractor sea trials.

Please note that regular attendance at the Scotstoun work location is essential, with occasional travel required between the Scotstoun and Govan shipyards, as well as occasional visits to supplier premises. The successful applicant is expected to reside within a reasonable commuting distance.

Please also be advised that this is a physically demanding role, and the successful applicant will undertake ship and ship-in-build surveillance and inspection activities. These activities may include but are not limited to, climbing vertical ladders, working at height and in confined spaces - suitable training will be provided.

Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

What you'll be doing

As the Hull and Outfit Engineering Manager, you will represent the Joint Acceptance Assurance Team (JAAT) management, overseeing the Hull and Outfit team to deliver assurance and acceptance ensuring high standards are maintained throughout all phases of the project.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Testing and commissioning activities for seamanship equipment, aviation facilities, and hotel services and equipment
  • Participating in preparations for and attending sea trials during a designated brief period
  • Managing the delivery against pre-defined engineering technical requirements and contractual acceptance goals
  • Interpreting and applying appropriate Defence and International standards whilst executing Engineering Management Plans
  • Developing requirements, test plans and acceptance criteria
  • Providing test and evaluation recommendations to technical decision makers
  • Identifying appropriate sources of evidence to inform technical decision making and seeking advice if necessary
  • Applying technical risk management techniques within a ship build environment

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Hold a relevant HNC (i.e., Level 4 or higher) qualification in an Engineering discipline, OR have equivalent experience in a ship building environment
  • Have experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes
  • Have experience of working with other teams and a variety of stakeholders
